Technology and filmBy Bailee Brooks
introduction• Technology has developed massively over the years, helping to
appeal to a wider range of audiences and create smoother production, perhaps more enjoyable within the film industry. I will be explaining the advantages and disadvantages of the changes within technology for audiences and institutions
Development of special effects
Advantages • Audiences-• Will experience escapism• Could help to make something
appear more realistic.• More pleasurable experiences. • Institutions- • More successful films • Higher production values • Could generate a wider audience
appeal due to genre etc. • Creates a more unique selling
point
Disadvantages• Audiences- • Could seem unrealistic • May be less relatable due to
the un-naturalistic elements.• Institution's- • Could be more expensive • More time consuming • Result not may be as desired
Development in Audio
Advantages
• Audiences- • Higher quality/clearer
audio recording • Increased verisimilitude • Institutions- • Could help to
communicate themes and genre quicker
Disadvantages
• Audiences-• Could seem unrealistic
due to sound effects etc. • Institutions- • More expensive • Equipment may be more
time consuming or difficult to use
Developments in video technology
Advantages • Audiences- • Clearer to view• Creates verisimilitude • could create a most naturalistic
effect depending on scenario, making a production relatable
• Institutions- • Less expensive • Easier to use• Easier to transport• Doesn’t reduce quality like
analogue does
Disadvantages • Audiences- • Could prefer more classical
analogue • Could seem unrealistic due to the
high quality being so unnatural etc.
• Institutions • Audiences may prefer a more
classical analogue filming • Most cinemas prefer digital
footage, meaning if filmed on a film camera will be harder to transport
Developments in pre production technology
Advantages • Audiences- • audiences get films quicker as
the film is more efficiently planned
• More pre production software available so anyone can become a prosumer
• Institutions- • increased efficiency of research
and planning i.e. script software • Use cgi to create characters/ set
in advance
Disadvantages
• Audiences- • n/a• Institutions- • Could be expensive as
software must be paid for
The internet
Advantages
• Audiences-• Technological
convergence- audiences can consume on multiple platforms • Institutions- • Cultural convergence-
audiences could spread products and make them viral for being enjoyable
Disadvantages • Audiences- • some may not use the
internet/social media
• • Institutions- • Cultural convergence- if
prosumers/consumers believe a product is bad they can spread this view via word of mouth/make it viral etc.
The transition from film reels to digital film
Advantages • Audiences-• Audiences could enjoy a smoother
production • Films can be seen as more realistic • Allows other techniques to be used
such as special effects providing escapism
• Institutions- • Can also use special effects to
attract audiences • Cheaper than buying reels • Larger range of functions available
Disadvantages • Audiences-• Some viewers may prefer
authenticity of reels/analogue footage.
• Institutions- • Most distributors/exhibitors
prefer digital footage- if filmed in an analogue style, this would have to be transferred.
• Initial cost of new hardware may be expensive
