RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND SUPERVISION
1- A project of 6 months conducted at Faculty of Medicine and Medical
Sciences, Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia January to June 1994. The
title of the project was (HORMONAL PROFILE OF IMPOTENT
MAKKANS), supervised by Professor Zulfaqar A. Khan, it was published as
described in publication. In this context we examined serum concentrations of
nine hormones in infertile and fertile male Makkans using, including
luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin,
estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and
thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Conclusion: Infertility was implicated in
21% of the population with correlated abnormalities of gonadotrophins,
thyroid, TSH, and testosterone. Hypothyroidism was established in 35% and
hyperthyroidism in 14% of the infertile population, where 28% of thyroid
abnormality constituted an independent infertile group. Hyperprolactinaemia
associated with low levels of LH and testosterone signifies a cluster of 28%,
while 14% of testosterone deficiency alone was causal for infertility.
However, infertility in 9% of the patients examined might have been
psychogenic in nature
2- A project of 4 months conducted at Imperial College School of medicine
May to August 1998. The tile of the project was (DIFFERENCES IN P450
EXPRESSION IN A RAT MODEL OF THE DEBRISOQUINE 4-
HYDROXYLASE POLYMORPHISM”, supervised by Professor Alan
Boobis. It was a requirement for MSc course in toxicology. The purpose of
this study was to investigate the level of expression of the P450 isoenzymes
CYP1A2, CYP2C12, CYP2C13, CYP3A1, CYP3A2 and CYP2E1 in the liver
of male and female Dark Agouti (DA), Sprague-Dawley (SD) and Wistar rats.
This was achieved by immunoquantitation by dot blotting using highly
specific antibodies against each P450 isoform. Conclusion:
immunoquantification using dot blotting was successful and demonstrated
5
sexes and strains differences in the levels of several P450 enzymes between
sexes and strains. This variation important implication in the use of different
rat strains studying drug metabolism.
3- A dissertation was submitted to Birkbeck College as a requirement for the
Diploma in Health Planning and management. The title was (A Medical and
Toxicological Overview of Organic Solvents), Supervised by Professor Magdi
Yaqoob. The dissertation aimed to overview the toxicological effects of
organic solvents on different body compartments and the management
procedures. Conclusion: The study supports the concept of industrial solvent
exposure and the development of many health problems. Therefore special
precaution must be taken when handling, using, transporting and storing
solvents. Workers must be aware of the hazards of solvents and be subjected
to frequent monitoring to assess the level of exposure. Environmental
protection agencies must be up to date with any toxicological studies of
organic solvents and take the proper action to safeguard the environment.
Finally, the evaluating physician however must be able to differentiate
between solvent related and non-solvent related toxicity.
4- Three years at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of
Medicine and Dentistry (January 2000 to January 2003), under the supervision
of Professor Magdi Yaqoob (MD, PhD, FRCP).

July 2003).
