GRESHAM SMITH AND PARTNERSCorporate Headquarters

Designed and built in 6 months, this project provided many opportunities to develop a creative, flexible space for the 350 person architecture engineering firm.

The project architect and myself reported to the GS&P executive committee while working closely with all departments to co-ordinate effective layouts and a successful move.

The new office occupies 5 floors of a downtown Nashville office building. As part of the project, we cut through the post-tension slab to link 3 consecutive floors with a custom ornamental stair.

The final plan incorporates a universal design that enables individuals or entire studios to move with relative ease from bay to bay and floor to floor. The bay design offers many opportunities to display artwork, project photos and current in process work along the tour path around the office.

ERLANGER MEDICAL CENTERProfessional Office Building Addition

This 30,000 square foot addition / renovation project encompasses the addition of a 12 story office tower to an existing hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Starting from the turn of the century, the existing hospital is a series of many additions, each dating from a different decade.

The goal of this project was to use the interior space to blend the new and old spaces in a seamless design. Our team developed a concept around a small section of the existing hospital preserved and coveted since 1912.. We studied the materials, the details and the overall character of the small space.

The finished space accomplishes the goals by incorporating many details echoing the sentiments expressed in the existing “jewel space”. The varying volumes of the new atrium are coherent to the visitor through the use of consistent design cues present in the architectural detailing, patterns and colors throughout the space.

MCMINNVILLE COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER170,000 sq. ft. Replacement Hospital

Located in McMinnville, Oregon the design of this replacement hospital was influenced by craftsman style buildings at a local college campus.

The main waiting area and dining room were central to the design of the interior spaces. As was a state of the art women’s center.

The main waiting area was originally planned with a 3 story atrium.

BOHAN CARDEN AND CHERRYAdvertising / Public Relations Firm 11,000 sq. ft.

The offices of Bohan Carden and Cherry were the result of acquiring several adjacent tenant suites over the period of 10 years. Lack of modification and integration of the acquired spaces left the office with no sense of continuity or harmony.

One approach was a complete demolition of the first floor. This plan would allow us to re-build with a fresh, light, open, industrial feeling that would allow the agency room to grow.

A second approach was preserve as much of the existing walls as possible and focus our design on the front door, the entry sequence and several specific problem areas.

SunTrust Music Row Financial CenterBranch Bank 12,000 sq. ft.

Located on music row in Nashville, Tennessee, this branch bank is an established provider of financial services to individuals and corporations in the music industry. As such, this branch required a focused aesthetic approach which was sometimes at odds with the banks traditional design background.

As a design team, we worked with the client to understand their specific requirements and acceptable limits of traditional bank variation. The final design is one that merges materials and space planning mechanisms familiar to the bank, with detailing, furniture & finishes that appeal to a hip, contemporary client.
