What is PHIN?
• PHIN was established at a Health Metrics Network meeting in Noumea in 2006
• It provides a mechanism for networking, support, information sharing and training for people working in health information
• Membership is currently free, and as at October 2011 there are 43 members from 16 different Pacific Island Countries and Territories
• Members represent a range of professional organisations and roles

Aim, outcomes and mission• Aims
– To support health outcomes and systems through strengthening the quality and use of health information
• Outcomes– To support the integration of health information systems– To provide a capacity-building mechanism for networking, support and
information sharing– To promote health information systems in the broader health systems
strengthening agenda• Mission
– Professionals working in health information systems in Pacific Island Countries and Territories shall promote and use reliable, complete and timely information for decision-making and for achieving greater health outcomes

What has PHIN done?
• Hosted several regional HIS meetings
• Provided training for its members
• Represented the Pacific at international HIS events
• Developed a website for resource sharing
• Developed a regional strategic plan for strengthening HIS

Strategic action points:1. Advocate for the recognition of, and improvement to,
HIS within PICTs2. Enhance institutional capacity and opportunities for
workforce development and training3. Strengthen the application of information and
communication technologies4. Improve data integration, quality and sharing5. Develop policies, regulations and legislation on HIS-
related issues6. Enhance HIS leadership and sustainable governance
