Other Coursework

Medical schools do not restrict you to areas of interest.

Any majors or bachelor's degrees are allowed, and even encouraged, in hopes of creating well-rounded future doctors.

You should take classes that can strengthen your application and provide medical schools with knowledge of your passion for pediatrics.

While you have the freedom to take any classes outside the required classes, you must take care to emphasize your desire to become a doctor and pediatrician.

Classes such as child development and child and adolescent psychology would complement this pursuit.

What Kind of Workplace Environment Is a Pediatrician In?

Office Environment

Most pediatricians work in an office environment, mostly in group practice, where several physicians join together to practice. Pediatricians also commonly work solo or in two-physician practices. The fewer physicians working in an office, the more responsibilities there are in terms of supervising support staff, patient caseload and being on call to answer patients' emergencies as they arise. On the whole, though, office work environments are comfortable.

Hospitals

The work environment of about 17 percent of pediatricians in 2010, the academy says, was a hospital, often a teaching hospital. Usually, hospital-based pediatricians are subspecialists, working in areas such as pediatric rheumatology, pediatric cardiology and pediatric emergency medicine. Not only do they practice their subspecialties, they guide new doctors.

Social Environment

Pediatricians do not work in a solitary environment, spending the majority of time with others. When providing direct care, almost the entire work day will call for constant contact with patients and their families. Pediatricians also supervise staff and collaborate with colleagues.

What is the Average Number of Hours a Pediatrician Works?

A pediatrician's hours will vary depending on his or her preference, the needs of the hospital or clinic where they work, and the pediatrician's experience.

Pediatricians spend some time seeing patients in a clinic setting.

They also have on-call hours where they work in a hospital setting for a set period.

Most pediatricians spend a certain number of their off hours working on paperwork and catching up on patients' charts. These are hours of work that don't factor into clinic hours or on-call hours.

History!

Hippocrates, Aristotle, Celsus, Soranus, and Galen, understood the difference in growing and maturing organisms that necessitated different treatment.

In the western world, the first generally accepted pediatric hospital is the Hospital for Sick Children, which opened in pairs in June 1802 on the site of a previous orphanage.

In the USA, the first similar institutions were the children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which opened in 1855, and then Boston Children’s Hospital in 1869.

Page 15: Pediatricianclassperoid 3.docx

Can a Pediatrician Set His or Her Own Hours?

Yes, a pediatrician can set his or her own hours to a degree.

Some hospital organizations may offer a choice between full-time and part-time positions for a pediatrician.

Full-time hours would range between 7-9 hours for a typical day.

Part-time work may range from 4-6 hours a day.

In addition to a choice between full- and part-time work, a more experienced pediatrician may set up his own private practice where he can have more control over his hours.

However, for someone who wants a career in medicine and to work directly with children, pediatric medicine provides great opportunities.

Some pediatricians may have flexibility in the number of hours they work

Why Pediatricians?

pediatrician22

It soon became apparent that because of body size, mass and resistance to illness differed from adults that the medical specialty of pediatricians was born. Other countries slowly followed suit and now it is generally accepted that if one’s child has a medical emergency one looks for a Pediatrician.
