SINCE 1997, MISSION HEALTHCARE HASserved residents throughout Minnesota, South Dakota and Wyoming while catering to those looking for long-term care and assisted living facilities.
President Paul Contris opened Mission Healthcare after the acquisition of three healthcare facilities in Minnesota before expanding its services and geographic reach even further with even more acquisitions. Today, Mission Healthcare offers transitional care, memory care, ventilator units, and much more in its 14 facilities. With approximately 1,500 employees, Mission Healthcare has doubled its size over this past year.
Mission Healthcare serves more than 1,300 residents with a majority of its services lying in skilled nursing, says Contris. The Mission Healthcare system takes on a resident-centered approach to provide exceptional care and is currently in the process of building a living facility in Sturgis, South Dakota.
“Mission Healthcare is the largest provider of ventilator care in the state of Minnesota in nursing homes,” says Thomas Boerboom, Chief Operating Officer of Mission Healthcare. “We also have a traumatic brain injury unit in

Minnesota and the majority of our facilities have a quick-recover unit for post-hospitalized residents.”
UNIQUENESS IN THE
INDUSTRY
What makes Mission Healthcare unique in the industry is that its organization is committed to transforming the idea of traditional nursing homes to make for a more positive image. “We’re making great strides in the quality of services we provide and we use a number of instruments to measure the effectiveness of our customer service program both internally and externally,” Boerboom says. Mission Healthcare refers to its employees as associates because they are viewed as partners within the company. “Our mission is focused on resident-centered care and we have been updating our facilities,” Boerboom continues with designs that have a “neighborhood-feel” by creating smaller units within its nursing homes. “We give out residents as many choices as possible, whether it’s with the food they want to eat or sleeping

late in the morning,” he continues. Theaters, coffee shops and other programs have also been included within Mission Healthcare’s facilities to encourage a community feel. “We’ve created a culture with strong leaders to give them the opportunity to make decisions in their community,” he says.

IMPROVING
In order to stay ahead of the competition, Mission Healthcare has implemented various procedures to improve the delivery of resident care and operational efficiencies. “We use an educational system called Silver Chair to explore options to educate our associates,” Contris says. The computerized system allows employees to work at their own pace in learning new skills applicable to
their daily responsibilities. Additionally, Mission Healthcare is also working
with technology to move the business forward. Currently, nursing systems are moving toward electronic records to increase efficiencies. “We
conduct internal surveys every year to assess our performance and improve the way we deliver care.” Contris says. “We’re making sure our systems are getting the quality results necessary to create satisfied residents and
families.” Boerboom also says that the company monitors its turnover to maintain consistency in the care provided to residents. “We focus on the basics and we believe we do them well,” he says. “Consistent staffing shows the respect we have for our residents and associates and it creates a family-feel when our

staff goes out of their way to do something special for our residents.”
“We’re looking to the future on how we’ll be delivering services because of healthcare reform,” Contris says. “We’re looking at how hospital acute care, our communities and nursing homes will work together in the future.” Hospitals will receive penalties next year if they have too many patient readmissions and Mission Healthcare is working with area hospitals to prevent this occurrence. For instance, the company has a full-time physician on staff in two of its South Dakota nursing facilities to take care of residents. This added Thomas Boerboom - COO of Mission Healthcare

ADVANCEMENTS
Apart from including electronic medical records, Mission Healthcare continues to focus on technology to take the company to a new level. The healthcare system is currently working with SmartLinx Solutions as a sophisticated system to manage its labor resources, payroll and scheduling. The new planned assisted living facility will also house a considerable amount of new technologies which will give residents the ability to communicate with family, says

Boerboom. “We also have technologies to monitor the movement of patients to improve their safety when a nurse is not present,” he says.
Another business that Boerboom and Contris are especially excited for is Welcyon, which is a Fitness center designed for individuals over the age of 50. “We’re really excited about this concept which was recently approved for franchising. Welcyon is a unique, innovative, and welcoming environment to achieve “fitness over fifty” with low impact strength and aerobic equipment guided by skilled coaches customized to the members health conditions and preferences.
