DEFINITION

• The WHO definition is: a BMI greater than or equal to 25 is overweight.

• Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults.

TYPES OF OBESITY

• EXOGENOUS OBESITY:

• obesity caused by a caloric intake greater than needed to meet the metabolic needs of the body

• ENDOGENOUS OBESITY:

• obesity resulting from dysfunction of the endocrine or metabolic system.

PATHOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION• Two types:• Hyperplastic type• Hypertrophic type

CAUSES

• Overeating• Pregnancy• Post menopausal women• Use of oral contraceptives• Diabetes mellitus• Hyperlipidemic state(type 4,5)• Prader willi syndrome• Endocrine disorders3

• ENDOCRINE DISORDERS:

• hypothyroidism• Cushing's syndrome• Cushing's disease• Polycystic ovary syndrome• Laurence Moon Biedl syndrome• Frochlich's syndrome• Acromegaly

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

• Clothes feeling tight and needing a larger size.

• The scale showing that you've gained weight.

• Having extra fat around the waist.

• A higher than normal body mass index and waist circumference

CLINICAL FEATURES

• is a central player in the pathophysiology of

• diabetes mellitus,

• insulin resistance,

• dyslipidemia,

• hypertension,

• atherosclerosis

Metabolic Changes in Obesity

• inc. TG's level

• inc. serum Cholesterol level

• less mobilization of fat

• lipoprotein lipase activity less

• hyperinsulinemia

• CO2 retention( Pickwickian syndrome)
