Not only does it help your child’s brain and body develop to their optimal potential, but it enables your child to live a healthy, energetic life, and minimizing illness.  For example, a child with the right balance of essential fatty acids in their diet is paving a strong foundation for good brain function and activity later in life.  A child who loads up on sugar and trans fat is walking down a road pointed towards obesity and insulin-resistance in later years.  Much of our health is dictated by daily food choices.

The sad truth is that if healthy eating were a class taught in school, most of us would be flunking!  Unfortunately, unless you focus on a nutrition emphasis in college, neither grad nor med school teaches soon-to-be-doctors how to apply nutritional science to people’s lives.  The few hours spent on nutrition’s impact on the body are easily forgotten because it doesn’t compare to the massive hours spent on other clinical information.  There is a huge disconnect between nutritional emphasis and the clinical world.

It is easy to get overwhelmed and confused by all the conflicting nutrition information we see on television and billboards, or read in magazines.  Food industry companies have perfected their marketing schemes with code words they put on the front of boxes such as “No Trans Fat!” or “Formulated with Vitamins and Minerals!”  And unless you know how to read an ingredient label, you don’t see the massive amounts of sugar and/or other unhealthy ingredients in the well-marketed product.  Here’s another hint – that picture of a bright-eyed, smiling child on the front of the box doesn’t mean your child will respond in the same way. Everyone gets fooled by good marketing. This is why fueling your children with optimal nutrients, vitamins, and minerals has got to start in the home and not on the road at a fast-food restaurant.  Children simply don’t know enough on their own to naturally choose to eat well, and fall prey to marketing gimmicks, too.  Children and parents both know the oft-repeated phrase that “Trix [cereal] is for kids!” but few people know that the amount of sugar and food additives their child is slurping up in each spoonful.

The foundations of a good diet are fairly simple, and consist of whole, organic food, and lots of fruits and vegetables.  Sending your children off to school after they’ve eaten a healthy, nutritious breakfast of whole foods – not highly sugared, processed cereals or Pop Tarts – is incredibly important.  Children need sustainable fuel to concentrate, play, and learn.  Always have a variety of healthy snacks available like fruit and vegetables.
