3 Reasons It’s Time For A Healthy Change

Traditional Machines Offer No Nutrition Info• Our environment is filled with health information. • There is limitless information about various diseases and

illnesses available at our fingertips via the internet, it seems we should have no problem staying healthy.

• However, the reality is that many of these messages are simply not sinking in.

• Your doctor can tell you at each visit to stop eating processed food and sugar but when you go to the store and are confronted with aisles and aisles of attractive, yet unhealthy, food, what are you going to do?

The Halls of Temptation Summon

• Unless your doctor goes grocery shopping with you, you’re likely to succumb to all that advertising you’ve seen on TV for the latest potato chip flavor or your favorite sugary soda.

• The same dynamic takes place when kids are left to make their own food choices at school. When parents aren’t there helping them make healthy selections, they will probably choose fat and calories.

• There are many reasons this happens – peer pressure, habit, attractive packaging, etc. – but the temptation of these unhealthy foods makes it hard for kids to make good choices.

• Vending machines in schools offer empty calories, too many fat grams and not enough nutritious ingredients. It’s time that the health craze reaches our schools and helps our kids get back on track.

• Lunch Is Important, But Watch What You Eat

Why Now?

• The biggest issue facing kids today is obesity. Over the last 30 years, the number of obese kids ages 6-17 has doubled! And chances are good that if a child is obese, he will become an obese adult.

• We need to instill good eating habits now, while kids are young, to help them be healthier kids and become healthy adults.

• One great way to do that is remove the temptation supplied by school vending machines. • It’s hard enough for kids to get a nutritious lunch from the school cafeteria. • With their diminished budgets, serving meals that meet the government’s nutrition

guidelines is tough. • But when kids are skipping the cafeteria meal altogether and choosing a vending machine

snack as a meal replacement, they’re on a slippery slope that leads to higher and higher obesity rates.

• Besides childhood obesity, kids are getting insane amounts of sugar from items in traditional vending machines. In fact, students consume nearly half of their daily calories at school. Much of this is from snacking happening throughout the day, before and after school and between classes. A candy bar and a soda often serve as a snack but when your snack consists of nearly 70 grams of sugars and over 400 calories, that’s a sure-fire recipe for obesity. Increased consumption of sugar leads to problems such as sugar crashes and difficulty concentrating in class. Although sugar has not been directly linked to ADD, it has been proven to affect the brain in such a way that makes kids fatigued and unable to focus.

How Can You Help?

• So how can we help kids make smart choices when faced with vending machines in schools? Nutritional education is rarely offered at school, so it’s up to us to let our kids know which foods to choose and why. There are many government nutrition programs with a ton of great info that helps parents start the dialog with their kids about eating healthy.

• Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign is perhaps the most high-profile of these programs. Its aim is to educate our youngsters, improve nutrition in schools and ultimately end childhood obesity within one generation.

• Ultimately, however, it’s up to parents to teach kids at home, and school administrators to give kids healthier options at schools. And to help in these efforts, let’s take a look at the alternative to school vending machines.
