“HELPING THE CARERS” 1 day workshop, London, 15 April,
Article by Kathryn Fox, SEED Volunteer (Carer Group Facilitator and Befriender) I help run the fortnightly carers group with Gemma for SEED. On Friday (15th April) I was lucky enough to attend a workshop called Helping the Carers with
the NCFED in London. The workshop looked at the anxiety of both carers and sufferers and how it comes about. We also dealt with attachment styles in
order to understand relationship dynamics and ways to communicate. A lot of
the content was somewhat familiar and the course delivery made it all very interesting and clear. My plan is to start integrating the ideas into the carers
group format. I feel positive for the group and would recommend this course to anyone working at SEED who plans to work with carers. Breathe’s Carer Advice & Information Clinics (alternate Fridays, 7.00pm – 8.30pm @
Fulwood Therapy Centre, 107 Blackbull Lane, Fulwood, Preston PR2 3QA
In conjunction with Preston City
Council, Preston Together and Preston
Domestic Violence Service, SEED and
Breathe were pleased to be part of the
celebrations for International Women’s
Day on 8 March.
The Hope Centre, St John’s Centre,
Preston had a drop-in event where we
had an information and advice stand.
Shelley Perry, Chief Executive of SEED
presented an hour workshop in the
Town Hall “Raising Awareness of Eating
Disorders”.
There will be a similar event on Friday 13
May to be held on Preston’s famous Flag

This month we have BeFriender Training (30 April) at UCLan, Moving
& Handling Training at Fulwood Therapy Centre (4 May), Team
Building at Galloways (14 May) and for some admin staff, Minute
Taking at Preston CVS (19 May). The Team Building will be a
fantastic day where we can all meet and get to know each other
better and have lots of fun in the process. Moving & Handling is
one aspect of our mandatory training and everyone who is involved
in SEED/Breathe is required to attend. Mandatory training is
compulsory for CQC registration and is essential for the safe and
efficient functioning of our organisation and the wellbeing of
individuals – be they staff or clients. I have the task of
sourcing the relevant courses and the funding to pay for them.
Wish me luck!
Saturday 26 March @ Fulwood Free Methodist Church
Article by Gemma Turner SEED Committee Member/Group Facilitator This event was to raise awareness of the
different support services in Preston, giving
the different services the opportunities to
network and essentially create stronger
support within mental health. I held a stand
for SEED and Breathe and was delighted to
liaise with other services and individuals that
were keen to learn more about the support
we offer. It was a pity that so many
individuals are affected by Eating Disorders
but who are unable to access support in their
areas. It was very well recognised at the event
that Eating Disorders are a widely
problematic illness and several services were
interested with linking with us to help
promote our support to individuals within
Lancashire. Many services showed an interest
in our treatment services, drop in and
support groups, both for people experiencing
eating distress as well as their loved ones and
carers. I also was able to make many links
with other services who would like to
support us with delivering our schools
projects, as well as our church projects.
SEED and Breathe provide a much needed
local service and I took inspiration from this
event to continue raising awareness and
fighting for the right for people to access
treatment and support.
