6 AUSTRALASIAN DENTIST CATEGORY New triage surgeries for Oral Health Centre WA T he Oral Health Centre of Western Australia (OHCWA) has added a new four-chair triage clinic to provide specialist care for patients. The University of Western Australia (UWA)- operated clinic includes two new bariatric surgeries enabling treatment of some patients who may not be able to be adequately catered for in other facilities. UWA’s Oral Health Centre General Manager, John Cochrane, said the new clinic was made possible by converting an under-utilised upstairs reception area to assist in teaching dental students and help provide much needed public dental health care. Design and technical assistance was provided by West Coast Dental of Perth, with the equipment supplied by A-dec Australia. The generously sized treatment rooms are equipped with A-dec 500 dental units, which were chosen for their robustness and ease of access for patients with limited mobility. The ultra thin backrest design also gives superior patient access for the dental team. Mr Cochrane explained that The Oral Health Centre of WA is first and foremost a teaching facility, and that its contract with the Government to provide dental services to eligible members of the public, ensured students had access to a suitable pool of patients to develop the necessary skills and aptitude. It is the only institution in WA offering tertiary training in dentistry including formal tertiary and technical education courses delivered jointly by UWA, Curtin University of Technology and the Central Institute of Technology. Students learn either by treating patients under close supervision by highly experienced and skilled tutors, or by observing general and specialist dentists treating a wide range of dental conditions. The UWA School of Dentistry covers all disciplines of dental education including general dentistry, oral surgery, periodontic, endodontic, orthodontic and oral medicine education programs, and believes students learn best when teaching and learning methods focus on student-centred approaches whenever possible. UWA provides modern clinical facilities, laboratories with substantial equipment and a clinical teaching ‘simulator’ lab with A-dec delivery systems, which was the forerunner of similar multi-leaf simulator labs in dental schools in the Eastern states. UWA’s Oral Health Centre is hoping to expand its facilities to keep up with the growing demand for both student places and also public dental care, triggered by the surge in Western Australia’s population growth. Mr Cochrane said the Oral Health Centre of WA is currently the only provider of specialist public dental care in WA and as such affords post-graduates with valuable hands-on dental training under the guidance of highly skilled specialists. It also provides access to specialist care that would be beyond the financial reach of many patients in the private dental system. New triage surgeries for Oral Health Centre WA

The Oral Health Centre of Western Australia

(OHCWA) has added a new four-chair triage clinic to provide specialist care for patients.

The University of Western Australia (UWA)-operated clinic includes two new bariatric surgeries enabling treatment of some patients who may not be able to be adequately catered for in other facilities.

UWA provides modern clinical facilities, laboratories with substantial equipment and a clinical teaching ‘simulator’ lab with A-dec delivery systems, which was the forerunner of similar multi-leaf simulator labs in dental schools in the Eastern states.
