Brain functions

The brain tells the body what to do, but it needs information first, this is where the nervous system comes in.

The main idea

There are two main part’s in the nervous system, the central nervous system and the peripheral system.

The nervous system is all to do with passing information through the body and into the brain.

What are nerves

Nerves carry messages to and from your brain, telling it if you are hungry, hot, cold or in pain. Nerves run from your spinal cord- a thick rope of nerves inside your back bone- to every part of your body.

The two main nervous systems

The central nervous system is to do with the brain and spinal cord.

While the peripheral system is to do with the senses.

Without your spine your body wouldn’t be able to move.

The nerve

Nerves divide many times as they leave the spinal cord so that they may reach all parts of the body. The thickest nerve is 1 inch thick and the thinnest is thinner than a human hair. Each nerve is a bundle of hundreds or thousands of neurons (nerve cells).

The spinal cord runs down a tunnel of holes in your backbone or spine. The bones protect it from damage. The cord is a thick bundle of nerves, connecting your brain to the rest of your body.

The peripheral system.The peripheral

system is made up of nerve cells or neurons, that are wired through the body, and connect up with the brain.

Neurons unlike other cells in the body, can not be repaired like other cells can.

All of your senses are wired up and sent to the brain.

All senses depend on the working nervous system. Our sense organs start to work when something stimulates special nerve cells called receptors in a sense organ.

We have five main sense organs. They are the eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and skin.
