Nationalgrocers.org National Grocers Association—Dietary supplement sales are getting stronger and stronger providing a clear opportunity for grocery stores to gain incremental sales with products that appeal to an increasing number of people worldwide. And while U.S. grocery stores averaged less than 4 percent year-over-year sales growth, the dietary supplements industry grew 7 percent overall. That is an exceptional sales growth in one of the most economically difficult markets in the last 70 years. So why are Americans and individual worldwide purchasing dietary supplements? Simply, people are becoming much more health conscious. The population is realizing that our diets contain too many processed foods that do not have the nutrients we need to keep us healthy, think fast food, soda, chips, and pre-packaged foods. Many foods are shipped long distances and are stored for long periods of time, both of which cause the depletion of vitamins in these foods, including the important B-complex and C vitamins. Increasing levels of environmental pollution in our air, water and food may cause our bodies to use more nutrients than normal to detoxify and eliminate harmful substances. This is especially true of the antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamins A, C, and E. Also, we are becoming savy to the fact that many fruits and vegetables that are genetically bred to improve visual appeal and crop yields, do not have the nutritional value that they used to. Current commercial agriculture techniques leave soil deficient in important minerals, causing the food grown in this soil to share the same mineral deficiencies. In addition, studies show a long decline of public confidence in medicine. People are looking for treatment alternatives in general. The numbers tell the story. National Grocers Association—Dietary supplement sales are getting stronger and stronger
providing a clear opportunity for grocery stores to gain incremental sales with products that
appeal to an increasing number of people worldwide.
And while U.S. grocery stores averaged less than 4 percent year-over-year sales growth, the
dietary supplements industry grew 7 percent overall. That is an exceptional sales growth in one
of the most economically difficult markets in the last 70 years.
So why are Americans and individual worldwide purchasing dietary supplements? Simply,
people are becoming much more health conscious. The population is realizing that our diets
contain too many processed foods that do not have the nutrients we need to keep us healthy,
think fast food, soda, chips, and pre-packaged foods. Many foods are shipped long distances and
are stored for long periods of time, both of which cause the depletion of vitamins in these foods,
including the important B-complex and C vitamins. Increasing levels of environmental pollution
in our air, water and food may cause our bodies to use more nutrients than normal to detoxify
and eliminate harmful substances. This is especially true of the antioxidant vitamins, such as
vitamins A, C, and E.
Also, we are becoming savy to the fact that many fruits and vegetables that are genetically bred
to improve visual appeal and crop yields, do not have the nutritional value that they used to.
Current commercial agriculture techniques leave soil deficient in important minerals, causing the
food grown in this soil to share the same mineral deficiencies.
In addition, studies show a long decline of public confidence in medicine. People are looking for
treatment alternatives in general. The numbers tell the story. Retail sales of dietary supplements
have soared in recent years.
