National Grocers Association | The Retail Opportunity
for Dietary Supplements
National Grocers Association—In recent years there has been a growing interest in dietary
supplements as well as a high degree of engagement among current buyers. In 2011, the dietary
supplements industry surpassed $30 billion threshold in U.S. sales which equated to a 7 percent
annual gain that represents $2 billion in incremental sales over the prior year. Overall, dietary
supplements have increased throughout the recession and its lingering aftermath. Sales are
anticipated to continue their rise at a steady speed.
Dietary supplements are vitamins, minerals, herbs, and many other products. They can come as
pills, capsules, powders, drinks, and energy bars. Some supplements can play an important role
in health. For example, calcium and vitamin D are important for keeping bones strong. Pregnant
women can take the vitamin folic acid to prevent certain birth defects in their babies.
The sale of vitamins, minerals and other supplements offers retailers an opportunity to generate
incremental volume and profits, while satisfying shoppers’ increasing demand for health-
promoting products.
The National Grocers Association needs to take notice that shoppers enthusiasm for dietary
supplements continues to grow. In a 2012 dietary supplements generated $11.5 billion in annual
sales. This was a 6.5 percent increase over the previous year. Based on this continual demand
for dietary supplements, sales are expected to reach $15.5 billion by 2017.
