The 80’s• The average expense for a day of hospital care

increased from $217 in 1979 to $411 in 1984 (AHA)

• Hospital costs rose 7.2% in 1988 (NEJM)

• In 1988, the private sector bears an increasing share of health costs as non-Medicare expenditures rose 9.0%

• How long this burden will be accepted by private payers remains uncertain (NEJM)

• Thirty-eight states form state health data commissions

• In response to lack of transparency in health care spending, states are seeking sources of robust information about the costs and performance of their state’s health care delivery system.

• In 2008, there were 7 APCD systems

• In 2009, 2 APCDs were implemented

• In 2010, 4 additional APCDs are being developed
