Introduction

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a world-wide threat to health.MRSA is in our environment.No-one is immune. It only takes a little carelessness for a cut, spot or medical incision to become a major infection.MRSA demands we have rigorous hygiene practices and habits.

Introduction II

Hygiene for MRSA starts with me and my home.Hygiene must include public access areas (schools, colleges, hospitals, gymnasiums, churches, mosques and synagogues, together with parks and playgrounds). Get medical help even over the Internet if you have a cut or wound that will not heal.

What is MRSA

MRSA is an abbreviation of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.Common name is Staph but it resists antibiotics.

Page 5: MRSA Infection and Symptoms

History of the Staphylococcus Aureus

First found and documented in the 1880's.Treated in the 1940's with penicillin. The Staph bacteria fought back and produced an enzyme called Penicillinase which fought off the antibiotic and rendered it useless.By 1959 90 to 95% of the Staphylococcus aureus resisted penicillin. The scientists developed a new antibiotic called Methicillin to overcome the enzyme that made the penicillin useless.

History of Staph II

Within 1 year of the introduction of Methicillin the first case of MRSA was reported in the UK and the bacteria was defeating the antibiotics sent in to kill it.The 1970's and 80's did not see much activity.By the 1990's there were many problems. MRSA became established in hospitals.People in hospital for an operation with MRSA on their skin are isolated and staff will wash their hands between each patient.

MRSA and the SportspersonThe MRSA bacteria is also found in the communityTake great care of your personal hygiene. Those most at risk in the community are those who we would have thought would have been most resistant i.e., those who play sports.Sportsmen and women are often their own worst enemies when they ridicule one another for going to the doctor, A cut that does not heal must be dealt with now by a doctor.

Why is it Such a Problem?

The MRSA bacteria is common. The MRSA bacteria passes easily from the skin of one person to another. The MRSA family of bacteria adapts to fight the antibiotics that are supposed to kill them. When MRSA finds a home in an open wound it is very hard to get rid of it.
