Visceral leishmaniasis is the second-largest parasitic killer in the world (after malaria), responsible for an estimated 500,000 cases each year worldwide. It first came to the attention of Western doctors in 1824 in Jessore, India (now Bangladesh), where it was initially thought to be a form of malaria. The agent of the disease was also first isolated in India—by Scottish doctor William Leishman and Irish physician Charles Donovan, working independently of each other. As they published their discovery almost simultaneously, the species was named for both of them—Leishmania donovani.

This 1938 Hollywood movie depicts the heroic efforts of a US Army Major to put an end to the Yellow Fever epidemic. The man succeeded and became a legend in US medical history. But he himself always credited the work to a Cuban doctor Carlos Finlay, who put forward the same theory 20 years ahead of him.

His 1902 discovery of the Aedes mosquito as the carrier of the disease paved the way for the US to take over the Panama Canal project in 1904, after a French effort had been waylaid by malaria and yellow fever. Name this iconic doctor.
