More To Hearing Loss Treatment Than Hearing Aids
While those with diagnosed hearing
losses might immediately think of
hearing aids, there are other
options, especially if the hearing
loss isn’t significant. If the patient
can hear fairly well in most
situations, it’s quite possible to retrain and rehabilitate the ears to
hear what sounds are being missed. An audiologist can perform
special tests that will not only verify the level of hearing lost, but
whether an individual can benefit from this kind of therapy.
There are also hearing devices that can help amplify sound if the
problems are just a result from not being able to hear the TV or
not hearing people clearly on the telephone. Amplification is
sometimes all that is needed to make these situations better, and
investing in hearing aids is not only expensive then, but a little
overboard. Having a telephone with volume control or using
closed captioning on the TV can help clarify what is heard if only
a few words are being missed. The level of projection and
inflection in the human voice is such that these slight changes
can make a difference with mild hearing loss without the cost of
hearing aids.
If there are other environmental factors that keep you from
hearing your best, and audiologist can also perform tests to
narrow it down and see what can be done. If it’s an occupational
hazard or hobby hazard, such as hunting, an audiologist will be
able to advise you how to best handle the situation without
hearing aids but while still protecting your current level of hearing
and hearing better during those times. Additional special hearing
devices are made just for those particular occasions0 and hearing
aid providers can share and show them with and to you.
