Why have a strategy?

• Response to national policy and ambition

• Organisational commitment

• Leadership and responsibility

• Aims and Goals

• Actions and outcomes

• Resources

Some enduring challenges

• Compared to medical colleagues nurses midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists and clinical scientists have a relatively poorly developed research culture and training

• Much practice not evidence based

• Poorly developed career pathways into research

• NIHR Clinical Academic Career (CAC) pathway

– Focus on research leaders/careers

– Small numbers

– Focus is on University contact – people fall through the gap when back in clinical practice

– RCB of the workforce (e.g. a research aware, engaged and active workforce) remains problematic.

– Cultural change?

Delivery and Implementation

• Recognise existing activity and realise the potential for growth and development.

• Delivery plan, overseen by an NMAHP Research Implementation Group. The RIG will review progress over time, and seek funding and resources. RIG meet 2 x a year

• Information to support research development and capacity building is available for individuals and managers on the Nursing, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals page on the CMFT website: https://research.cmft.nhs.uk/partnering/nurses-midwives-and-allied-health-professionals

• Heads of Nursing and AHP managers have been asked to commit to developing NMAHP research, and delivering the Strategy, within their areas.

Clinical Research Nursing

Page 19: Lets Talk Research 2015 - Tim Twelvetree and Angela Todd - Building research capacity using a nursing, midwifery and AHP research strategy

• SWOT analysis

– What is your trust Like re R&I– What are its clinical /research strengths– Would the organisational culture support research

capacity building– What research is currently going on

– Are there any leading lights

– Where do you fit in?– Who are your stakeholders – internal and external
