Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders after stroke, and affects at least 50million people worldwide. These occur when cortical neurons fire excessively,hypersynchronously, or both. This might affect, for example, the muscles, the senses,consciousness, or a combination. Epilepsy may occur for a variety of reasons; some forms havebeen classified into epileptic syndromes, most of which begin in childhood. About 60% of patientswill achieve control of their epilepsy with the first drug they use, whereas about 30% do notachieve control with drugs. When drugs fail, other options include epilepsy surgery, vagus nervestimulation and the ketogenic diet.

I will try to list some reliable sources.

Since, I’m not graduated as a Doctor, therefore, it isbetter to get an answer from recognized experts.

The Ketogenic diet is one of the oldesttreatments for epilepsy. It is intended tomaintain the starvation or fasting metabolismover a long period of time. When the body is ina fasting state, it creates ketones, a by-productof fat-burning metabolism. It has long beenrecognized that seizures often lessen ordisappear during periods of fasting in someindividuals with epilepsy.

These diets typically start with fasting so that the body produces a moderate to large amount of ketones.

It is best done in the hospital, so the individual can be monitored for side-effects of potential such asvomiting, low blood sugar, dehydration, and seizures.

Medications can also be adjusted during this period to avoid sedatives (tranquilizing effects of drugs),another common side effect.

How Long Does It Take To Work? The trial period will be at least two months to decide whether this dietis effective. If so, it usually continues for two years.

At this time, individuals can often reduce the number of medications they take for seizures.

Many children seem happier and more sensitive to diet, even before the drug wears off.

People who are practicing the diet should be monitored by dietitians, nurses and doctors – especially aneurologist – familiar with its use.

Does Ketogenic Diet Work For Everyone?

Ketogenic diet may not work for everyone.

However it is suitable for various types of seizure and epilepsy syndrome, including Astatic myoclonicepilepsy, Dravet syndrome, infantile spasms (West syndrome), and those who have tuberoussclerosis.

Now a report, appearing several weeks ago in the journal Neurology, reveals that in fact, aketogenic diet is also profoundly helpful in adults as well in terms of treating epilepsy. Thisresearch, published by investigators in Maryland, found that there was at least a 50% reduction inseizures in 32% of patients treated with a ketogenic diet as well as in 29% of patients who wenton a modified Atkins diet. In fact, 9% of those placed on the ketogenic diet and 5% of those placedon the modified Atkins diet had a greater than 90% reduction in the frequency of their epilepticseizures. These diets were designed such that the bulk of calories, between 67% and 75%, camefrom fat. The study revealed that “the anticonvulsant effect occurs quickly with both diets, withindays to weeks.” Interestingly, the most common side effect was weight-loss which the officeindicated “maybe advantageous inpatients with obesity.”
