Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory condition that mainly affects the scalp and other oily areas of the body such as the face, upper chest and back. It is sometimes referred to as seborrheiceczema, and when it occurs in infants, cradle cap.

Seborrheic dermatitis is usually a long-term condition that takes several treatments before symptoms disappear. Those who struggle with seborrheicdermatitis will most likely experience flare-ups over the course of their lives. Symptoms typically won’t abate without targeted treatment. Though this condition is not contagious or dangerous to overall health, it may be uncomfortable or embarrassing. It’s important to note that seborrheic dermatitis is not caused by poor hygiene, nor is it an allergic reaction.

Cradle cap is a type of seborrheic

dermatitis that forms on a baby’s scalp.

Though the thick and crusty patches of

skin may be alarming, it is not harmful,

and it will usually go away after six

months to a year. Patches of red, scaly

skin can also form on a baby’s bottom, in

which case it is often mistaken for diaper

rash. In rare circumstances, the red,

scaly patches may cover a baby’s entire

body.

The cause of seborrheic

dermatitis is largely unknown.

Genes appear to play a role. The

balance of naturally occurring

yeast that is present in the oil of

the skin and changing seasons can

also be linked to seborrheic

dermatitis.
