Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory condition that mainly affects the scalp and other oily areas of the body such as the face, upper chest and back. It is sometimes referred to as seborrheiceczema, and when it occurs in infants, cradle cap.

Seborrheic dermatitis is usually a long-term condition that takes several treatments before symptoms disappear. Cradle cap is a type of seborrheic

dermatitis that forms on a baby’s scalp.

Though the thick and crusty patches of

skin may be alarming, it is not harmful,

and it will usually go away after six

months to a year. Patches of red, scaly

skin can also form on a baby’s bottom, in

which case it is often mistaken for diaper

rash. In rare circumstances, the red,

scaly patches may cover a baby’s entire

body.

Genes appear to play a role. The

yeast that is present in the oil of
