WHAT ARE INTERPERSONAL SKILLS?

Interpersonal skills, in the health-care setting, are skills thatare exhibited when nurses use evidence-based and

theorybasedstyles of communication with their patients andcolleagues. They can also be thought of as behaviours thathelp us to achieve an objective. People who have developedstrong interpersonal skills are usually more successful inboth their professional and personal lives.

Employers often seek to hire staff with ‘strong interpersonalskills’; they want people who will work well in a team and beable to communicate effectively with colleagues, customersand clients. Interpersonal skills are not just importantin the workplace; our personal and social lives can alsobenefi t from better interpersonal skills. People with goodinterpersonal skills are usually perceived as optimistic,calm, confi dent and charismatic, qualities that are oftenendearing or appealing to others

You will find that interpersonal skills sometimes overlap

with spoken communication skills. This is because

communication is crucial to good interpersonal skills.

There are just six interpersonal skills that form a process

that is applicable to all situations:

analysing the situation,• establishing a realistic objective,• selecting appropriate ways of behaving,• controlling your behaviour,• shaping other people’s behaviour,• monitoring our own and others’ behaviour.

These individual skills need to be applied appropriately. For example, if you:

• are discussing how to solve a problem with a personwho has more experience than you, then listening isimportant; • know much more about what needs to be doneto solve a problem than another person, thencommunicating clearly and testing the other person’sunderstanding are higher priorities.

1 .Effective communication is a very important skill to have in the workplace since the main goals are to listen

and comprehend what someone is saying to you2. Assertiveness and assertive communication

is also very important interpersonal skills in the workplace.

3. Anger management is also an effective interpersonalskill that is invaluable in the workplace. Everyone becomes angry about something,
