− Gradual progress towards the implementation of a single-payer national health insurance (NHI) system by January 2014, combining the existing health insurance schemes.
− Government efforts to upgrade the healthcare infrastructure ahead of implementation of NHI, with significant investments needed outside Java.
− Rapid expansion of the private hospital sector, including development of hospital chains and investment from foreign hospital groups.
− Overprescribing and polypharmacy will remain common, although attempts may be made to prevent misuse of antibiotics.
− Once NHI is in place, possibility of the introduction of a national formulary and more attention to rational prescribing.
− Growing pressure on prices following implementation of NHI, with the possibility of the creation of a national procurement agency.
− Expansion of field forces to boost geographic coverage.
