WELCOME!

Session Outline
Inquiry-Based Learning Literature Search: Definition & Process Literature Search vs. Comprehensive Review Research Databases
PubMed Medline Global Health HealthSTAR Web of Science
Peer-Reviewed Journals E-Journals Ebrary
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Inquiry-Based Learning
Seeking truth, information, and knowledge through a questioning process (natural way of learning)
Learner is involved in his/her own education Rather than memorizing facts to ensure the
“correct” answer, inquiry focuses on the process of developing one’s skills to solve problems and resolve issues
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Literature Search: Definition
Literature Search is:
“a detailed, organized, step-by-step search for [all] material available on a topic”
RGU: How to do a Literature Search. (2006). Retrieved August 6, 2008 from http://www.rgu.ac.uk/library/howto/page.cfm?pge=25989
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Literature Search Process: Research Goals
Select and refine topic
Develop an effective search strategy
Choose or select an appropriate resource (database, e-journal, etc.) in which to conduct the search
Cite your sources using an approved style guide (i.e. APA)
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Literature Search vs. Comprehensive Review
Literature Search Introduces you (the
researcher) to information available on a particular topic
Find out what prominent researchers have to say about your topic
Don’t just summarize what’s already been written (don’t reinvent the wheel); describe, summarize, evaluate, put your own ideas into it!
Comprehensive Review Brings together findings
from range of research interventions
Aim is to identify as many relevant studies as possible around a topic
Aim: minimize bias (consider various viewpoints/perspectives on a topic)
Go beyond the core resources (search the grey literature as well!)
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Goal: Produce a Literature Review
Literature Review
QUALITATIVE REVIEW QUANTITATIVE REVIEW
Refers to the meanings, concepts, definitions, characteristics, symbols, and meanings of things
Refers to counts and measures of things (formulas, statistics, etc)
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Select a Topic
Research Question:
The implementation of a public health policy to combat cases of malaria among children in Africa
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Refine the Topic
Keywords: Malaria Child* Africa Health policy Public health policy
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Develop an Effective Search Strategy
Before the search begins… Organize your search so that you know what you
are looking for before beginning your trek.
These searching tools can help you become better organized: WISPR PICO
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
WISPR
adapted from Helen Lee Robertson
PICO
The implementation of a public health policy to combat the malaria epidemic among children in Africa
Patient, Population or Problem Children in Africa (suffering from malaria)
Intervention, Prognostic Factor or Exposure
Modern medicine (anti-malarial drug)
Comparison or Intervention (if appropriate)
Mosquito nets, bed nets
Outcome to measure or achieve Malaria prevention/death reduction
Marcus Vaska, Oct. 2008
Refining a Search
Boolean Operators AND (narrows search, retrieving records containing all of the terms) OR (broadens search, retrieving records containing any of the terms) NOT (excludes terms from a search, retrieving records that do not
contain the term following it.)
Truncation/Wildcard * system* = returns records on system, systems, systematic ? wom?n = returns records on both woman and women (singular and
plural forms)
Nesting Parenthesis, () keep related terms together
If searching for an exact phrase, enclose phrase in quotation marks, “”

A Brief Note on SFX
Provides a link between several databases and full-text articles
Not only does SFX automatically search the library catalogue for electronic holdings, it also notifies the user when material is not available online
For more information, please consult http://library.ucalgary.ca/services/finditsfxfulltextservice/whatisfindit-sfx.php
