The last few years has seen large swarms of taut, super fit and agile women who are shaping us, and making this world a healthier, fitter place to live in. Personal trainers like Tracy Anderson, Jillian Michaels and Ramona Braganza today have paved the way for intelligent, fit female personal trainers to thrive in the wellness industry.  Personal training, too, like any career option has its pros and cons; there are several pointers one must take note of, and deliberate over when considering fitness training asa professional career option.

1.   Do your homework- Fitness training as a career avenue has several facets to it. You can be a personal trainer or a group exercise trainer. You may want to be a Pilates/yoga instructor or a spinning instructor; each particular avenue is a unique specialization and is often quite different from the other. It may even be worthwhile to read about fitness training as a career option (salary, job profile), its job description, speak to professional trainers who are currently training and ask them for their honest opinion.

2.   Walk your talk- You must represent what you preach and be your ‘own brand ambassador’ for better marketing. For instance, if you are an amateur at weight training and haven’t been able to perform a push up correctly; it may be worth it to spend time and invest in a gym first so you know the inner workings of your body and a gym better. Your body and your fitness levels should be able to speak for you.

3.   Spruce up your credentials- The health industry has earned itself a bad name because of the multitude of people who train people for a living without being certified orwell informed themselves.  I feel that while formal education should be made absolutely necessary, and should complement those who are passionate about exercise science and can keep abreast of the latest in health and exercise.

A bachelor’s degree in health an exercise science is your best bet.  In the event, that formal undergraduate education poses a problem; a few accreditation courses can help equip you with the tools you need. For instance,in Delhi, Reebok India organizes the course twice a year under the ReebokInstructor Alliance programme. This 2 ½-month 80-hour course culminates in anA-level Master Trainer Exam, which you must clear in order to be certified.Alternatively, more popular certifications are available through organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine  (commonly known as ACSM) and the AmericanCouncil on Exercise (ACE)
