Hearing Audiogram

A hearing audiogram is the technical name for a hearing test. A hearing audiogram is a technique used by hearing professionals to measure how well a person can hear. In

most cases, to get a hearing audiogram, a patient will sit inside a booth with some degree of soundproofing. A hearing professional will then measure how well the

patient can hear sounds that are transmitted through air, which is how we

hear most sound. To measure this, the audiologist will first

identify either the left ear or right ear for testing. They will then play tones of different frequencies, ranging from low-pitch sounds to high pitch sounds. Each time the patient hears the tone, they respond, either by clicking a button or raising their hand. The

audiologist then makes each tone less intense to find the quietest sound that the patient can hear. When they have done this for all sound frequencies, they then repeat this for the other ear. This tells the audiologist how well each ear can hear sounds that travel

through air. If the hearing in either ear is poorer than what is considered to be normal, then the audiologist will try to assess whether the hearing deficit is a result of problems in the middle ear or the hearing nerve itself. To assess this, hearing will be

tested using a bone-vibrator, which bypasses the middle ear and

transmits sound directly to the hearing nerve. If hearing is

normal with this device it suggests that the problem is with the middle ear. If hearing is not normal using the bone-vibrator, it suggests that the problem is with the hearing nerve itself. The extent of the hearing loss and the root will dictate the avenue for

treatment. Potential avenues would be a hearing aid or referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat clinic where a surgery might be offered.
