How much sunscreen doI really need to put on?Anytime you're planning to beoutdoors, go with an SPF of atleast 30 (45 for a little extrainsurance) and put plenty on.The rule of thumb is l ounce(the size of a shot glass) on yourbody, and a teaspoon for yourface, but derms advise beingeven more generous. Reapplyevery two hours-more often ifyou're in and out of the water.

washing your face afterworking up a sweat outdoors:Summer breakouts often havemore to do with sweating thanwearing sunscreen.

How do I know if 'I'mspraying on enoughsunscreen? Ifeellike itall blows away!Spray sunscreens aren't aspowerful as 10'0 s t e 'cis to look for one labeled"continuous spray" (no need topump; it keeps spraying aslong as your finger stays on thebutton) and apply two coatsnot one-e el:Y i:10tJr;Br."-f\oaansays. We like (2) AveenoHydrosport Sunscreen SpraySPF 30 ($10; mass retailers)and (3) Coppertone Sport ProSeries Continuous Spray ($11;mass retailers).

~hatshouldIlookforin a sunscreen if I havesensitive skin? All the dermatologists weinterviewed recommendmineral-based or physicalsunscreens made withmicronized titanium dioxideand/orzinc oxide insteadof chemical sunscreensbecause they're less likely toirritate sensitive skin. Plus, the latest mineral sunscreensgive the gentle protectionof a physical sunscreen withoutleaving a white cast. Dermssuggest (4) La Roche-PosayAnthelios 50 Mineral Ultra LightSunscreen Fluid ($33;laroche-posay.us).

etANTHEL ~~.:.;~I·Moles: What's Normal, What's NotDon't put off that annual skin cancer screening: "Melanoma incidenceis increasing faster than any other type of skin cancer," says JeremyGreen, MD. "If it's caught early, the survival rate is about 98 percent. But once it spreads to other parts of the body, it's usually letha!." The redflags are the ABCDs (see photos, left). Is sunscreen reallynecessary for lips?Absolutely. In the past, itwasn't unusual for lip productsto come with little or no SPF.Thankfully, many companieshave upped the level ofprotection in lip balms. That'scritical because skin cancerson the lower lip, in particular, are especially aggressive."These cancers aredangerous, as they're morelikely to spread," explainsJeremy Green, MD, a Miamidermatologist. Look for a balmwith an SPF of at least 30(such as (5) Nivea A Kiss ofProtection Lip Care SPF 30,$3; mass retailers).

What's the easiest way tostay protected when I'mworking out?Dab an SPF (of at least 30)stick or gel on your face, neck, and chest. and on hot spotslike shoulders and the backs ofyour hands. "The non-tackysticks are great because theyreally stay put." saysWashington, D.C.-baseddermatologist Tina Alster, MD.(We like (6) Clinique Sun SPF45 Targeted Protection Stick,$19; clinique.com.) For the restof your body, use a sunscreenspray. If you're swimming orperspiring a lot. opt for one ofthe new formulas that aremarked "water resistant" forup to 40 or 80 minutes.

HOW TO FAKE A GREAT TANConjuring up a hint of a tan (no sun! no skin cancerrisk!) is surprisingly easy. Cindy Barshop, ownerof Completely Bare spas in New York City, sharesher secrets for streak-free, believable color.

1. Exfoliate your skin witha gentle, oil-free scrub.2. Dab petroleum jelly ondry spots (feet, elbows, knees) and on toenailsand fingernails. TryVaseline Petroleum JellyCocoa Butter (bottomright, $4; drugstores).

3. Apply tanner to legsfirst. Barshop's pick:L'Oreal Sublime BronzeClear Self-Tanning Gel(top right, $11;massretailers). Start with anup-and-down motion, and then change to littlecircular movements.

4. On your face, start blendingtanner from thecenter and work outward.

5. Wash and dryhands, then add a touchof tanner to thebacks of your handsusing a sponge.

was originally used for watersports, but is now popular as asun protector. Look for one witha UPF rating of 50+. "Thosethings are lifesavers-totalprotection, even when wet," Dr.Alster says. Likewise, your sunhat should be floppy, wide-brimmed, and made from atightly woven material.

Will my SPFfoundation do the trickfor workdays?"You'd have to slap on a heck ofa lot to make it truly effective,"

Dr. Green says. A better idea:Layer. Wash your face, swipeon a few drops of antioxidantserum to boost your protection, and apply a tinted moisturizeror foundation with SPF 15 ormore. Try (7) Stila Sheer ColorTinted Moisturizer SPF 20($34; stilacosmetics.com).Top it with an ultrafine SPFmineral powder (such as (8)BareMinerals SPF 30 NaturalSunscreen, $28; bareminerals.com). Dr. Green recommendscarrying the powder in yourbag for touch-ups during theday-especially if you'relunching alfresco.

DECODING THE LABELWhat the new FDAguidelines mean for you.~ Broad spectrumUnder the newrules, only broadspectrumsunscreens(those with UVAandUVBprotection) withanSPF 15orhigher can claimto reduce therisk of skincancer and earlyaging. Productswith an SPF 2-14will be labeledwith a warning

Bounce.Backfrom aBurnSo you slipped up. Thefirst thing to do is try toreverse the damage. "Usecool baths, ice packs, andhydrocortisone cream tobring down inflammation, and take aspirin oribuprofen," says TinaAlster, MD. Treatmentsthat contain oatmeal oraloe can help soothelobster-red skin. And makesure to stay well hydrated,Dr. Alster adds. "A sunburncan dry out your skin andaffect your inner waterbalance, causing you tobecome dehydrated."

YOUR HAIR NEEDSSPF, TOO!Ultraviolet rays don't just damage your skin-they dry out your hair, fade your color, and zapoverall shine. Here are the rules to live by if youwant to keep your hair looking great all summer:

~ Soak your strands with tap water before divinginto the pool-wet hair sponges up less chlorinethan dry hair, says Lourdes Alvarez, a stylist atSharp Designs Salon in Coral Gables, Florida.

~ Mist on a long-lasting sunscreen for hair. likePaul Mitchell Sun Shield Conditioning Spray(bottom left, $lS; paulmitchell.com for locations). It will keep your color from fading while addingmoisture. Or slick on a h~ir mask with UV filters .•

Try Fekkai After Sun .~ Daily Mask (top left, f

~ Protect your scalp.Apply SPF 30 alongyour part.
