TYPES OF GUIDENCEEducational Guidance• To monitor the academic progress of the students.• To acquaint the students with the prescribed

curriculum.• To identify the academically gifted, backward, creative

and other category of special learners.• To assist students in getting information about further education.• To diagnose the learning difficulties of students and

help them over come the same.

•Vocational GuidanceAccording to ‘Crow and Crow’“Vocational Guidance usually is interpreted as the

assistance given to the learners to choose, prepare for and progress in an occupation.”• Personal Guidance

Personal guidance may be defined as the assistance offered

to the individual to solve this emotional, social ethical and moral as well as health problems. Thus personal guidance deals with all those problems of life which are not covered under educational and vocational guidance.

ELEMENTS OF COUNSELLING•Counselling involves two individuals-one seeking help &

the other a professionally trained person who can help the first.

• There should be a relationship of mutual respect between the two individuals.

•Counselling is aimed at bringing about desired changes in the individual for self-realisation& providing assistance to solve problems through an intimate personal relationship.

• The counsellor discovers the problems of the counselee & help him to set up realistic goals

• If counselee is a student, counselling helps him to take a decision, make a choice or find a direction in matters related to an educational programme or career.

• It helps the counselee acquire independence & develop a sense of responsibility.

• It is more than advice giving.

• It involves something more than offering an assistance to find a solution to an immediate problems.

•Counselling is democratic.

•Counselling concerns itself with attitudes as well as actions

•Counselling is cantered around the needs & aspirations of students

•Counselling emphasizes thinking with the individual•Avoid directional attitude•Maintain relationship of trust and confidence

with the client•Client need is to be put first• Everyone participate in the counselling must

feel comfortable

• The clients family members and significant influencing personnel must be included in the counselling process• Skills of warmth, friendliness, openness, and

empathy are ingredients of successful counselling process•Counsellor has to listen attentively, answer

question objectively, and reinforce important information•Maintain dignity of individual is primary concern
