FROM VEAL TO
VEGGIES
“Agatha made a really great old-fashioned chicken pot pie dinner. I ate all of mine except for the peas and carrots. I am not into vegetables.”
- Ghost Beach, R.L. Stine
I WAS TOTALLY THAT KID!
I thought vegetables were SO REVOLTING AND POINTLESS!
MEATY MEALS Growing up, my family dinners
were always focused on some sort of meat..
as the main course and no, I am not just talking about some boring, roasted chicken..
You see, my family not only enjoyed meat..but they were also hunters and exotic game enthusiasts!
Some examples:LambDuckPheasantPigeonBearRabbitCow tongueVenison (yes, Bambi!)
“Wait, I’m eating whatttttt?!”
Needless to say, it was pretty embarrassing that
the main course often had to be explained
to our dinner guests.
“Tofurkey..is that like a turkey fart?”
So..with that background in mind..
About a year ago, I moved to San Francisco, CA. to attend college.
I knew I was to expect quite a change living here due
to the “liberal lifestyle.”
However, I was quite surprised to notice that this city also had
NUMEROUS bakeries, grocery stores and restaurants
all catering to
VEGETARIANS and VEGANS.
This whole “I AM OBSESSED WITH VEGETABLES” diet really became apparent when I went to a local S.F. grocery store, picked out my steak of choice, headed to the check out..and while waiting in line, I was given the DIRTIEST, MEANEST looks by others to which I then realized it was because I was holding a meat package with a bright orange sticker on it that said..
“VEAL!”
All my life I was told that
MEAT was ESSENTIAL to my diet…
not vegetables!
I realized that more than ever, I had to really
incorporate vegetables into my diet..
not because I was surrounded by veggie-freaks,
but because my own health was at stake! :[
V e g g ie f r ie n d ly
I now mostly eat
vegetarian diet..
My recent
favorites are pumpkin soup
and
acorn squash and spinach
quesadillas!
I still give into
my carnivorous cravings at
times..
I just make sure I have a side
of
vegetables with them!
