As the name suggests, diabetes insipidus, which occurs post- partum or during pregnancy, is termed Gestational.

Experts believe that this diabetes occurs because of excess production/impaired clearance of vasopressinase. The placenta in mothers-to-be produces vasopressinase which is responsible for breaking up the antidiuretic hormone (ADH).

Unlike other forms of Diabetes Insipidus, this gestational diabetes is treated with desmopressin. Vasopressin is not used to assuage this disease. Sometimes, though rarely, gestation diabetes Insipidus occurs because the thirst mechanism of the patient goes wrong. Under these circumstances, it is unadvisable to use desmopressin.

This disease could also be set off by other serious pregnancy related diseases like pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome and acute fatty liver of pregnancy. In this case, the other diseases impair hepatic clearance of vasopressinase circulating in the body. If these other serious diseases exist in a mother-to-be, they can only be treated after the birth of the baby. These other serious diseases need to be treated promptly.
