Many Americans entered the 2008 recession already deeply in debt. According to the Federal Reserve, American consumers owed an average of $18,654 per household in October 2003, not including mortgage debt, a 41 percent increase from 1998.

In 1984, the average American saved 11.2 percent of his or her disposable income. By 2004, this
percentage had fallen to 1.2 percent.4
America has more obese residents than any other industrialized nation. In 1990, 10 states had an obesity rate of less than 10 percent and no state had a rate greater than 15 percent.

By 2010, at least 20 percent of the residents of every state, except Colorado, were obese and in a dozen states the obesity rate had risen above 30 percent.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010, Americans spent nine times as much time watching television (2.73 hours/day) than they did engaging in sports, exercise, or recreational activities (0.31 hours/ day.)

American lifespan of 78 years.
Most we assessed for the book overestimated their expected
lifespan by 8-10 years!.
