“Building Sustainability into Clinical innovation”

What I aimed to achieve:To learn how to build sustainability into change and innovation programs, in order to apply this knowledge in future developments for the ACI.

● What are key factors that have led to sustainability of NHS initiatives?

● How do they embed their successful initiatives into the organisation?

● Helpful tools and techniques

● What are the strengths of the ACI, which will effectively support these mechanisms?

● What are frequent barriers and obstructions to sustainable innovation?

What I Did on my Scholarship:

Two weeks in UK visiting various NHS sites:

● London

● Devon

● Coventry: NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement

● Nottingham

● Edinburgh

● In addition:

Conference on “Measuring Patient Experience”

Key “Take-Home” messages for ACI:

1. Executive and Clinician Leadership for change

2. Credibility, as a successful Change Agent

3. Information and Support – To engage continuing participation

4. Resources to support the implementation of new Model of Care

5. Stakeholder Engagement, to support new Model of Care

6. Staff Training and Capacity Building

7. Benefits of Clinician Networks

Produced a Report:With Recommendations for ACI to:

1. Demonstrate a track record in achieving

results from change programs

2. Engage LHD Executives and Boards.

3. Engage with NSW Health and the Health

Minister to provide leadership and

support at the highest level.

4. Ensure ACI workforce has the skills and

the capacity to drive sustainable

innovation.

5. Build sustainability planning into all ACI

innovation programs.

6. Engage the “Four Pillars” in a joint

innovation program of importance to the

health system.

What has happened since?Immense change has happened to ACI since 2011

The major change is the establishment of the

Centre for Program Design and Innovation (CPDI)● Centre for Healthcare Redesign (CHR)

● Clinical Redesign Project Implementation

Introduction of AIM Training for all ACI staff

members – and for clinicians.

Strong lines of communication with LHDs

Continue to engage clinicians via Networks

Recommendation for HARC Scholarships:

Information from the scholarship should be

formally presented to colleagues, so the

learnings are shared beyond the individual

scholar.

The Report and Recommendations should be

formally submitted to the Board, for

consideration and action.

Recommendation for HARC Scholars:

Be prepared!!!

Develop your goals and Research Questions very

clearly, building on to your HARC Scholarship

application

Develop data collection Tool in advance, for

consistency.

Write up Report in advance (will be a few Gaps….)

Every day whilst on Tour, summarise each day’s

results
