The Care of the Handicapped in the Gaza Strip interestedin the need to work hard to find a professional solutionfor the problems of hearing and speech and languagedisorders in Gaza City and its suburbs, specifically due tothe increased ratio of the problem in the community,especially after the recent war on Gaza, as well as theabsence of professional centers in many areas thatequipped to provide therapeutic services for the infectedchildren specially, and that therapy is limited only onsimple services match with the current assessment andtherapy tools, and lack of the community education forparents in order to orient them about how to deal withinfected cases.
Equipping the audio and speech clinic using advancedtools is a new and typical project in the region aimed atreducing the hearing, speech and language problems. andwhat led us to propose this project that disorders ofhearing, speech and language is one of the most commonproblems in the Gaza Strip, estimated at 6%, according tostatistics of General Union of Disabled in the Gaza Strip,and the ratio of hearing, speech and language problems oftotal communication disorders is 80% according tostatistics of the national center for communityrehabilitation, and the disorders percentage at thatcategory is 7.6% of the disabilities ratio, and 0.16% of thepopulation, about two cases of every 1000 person. Amongthese cases 56% males and 44% females in the age group5-9 years.
The language and speech program was established in1986 to provide diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitationservices for people with speech and language,problems, where firstly, an assessment is done toidentify the problem and develop a plan that includesspeech problems that the child suffer from, and thatplan individual is a short-term for 3 months will begiven to the child within the individual sessions of halfan hour each session and that through threeeducational programs:
1- Early Intervention Program Work with children with hard disabilities in order to originate alanguage of communication between the disabled and thesurrounding environment in any form, whether by sign orhumming.2- The linguistic comprehension Program A program that measures the child's ability of saying simplewords and expression of concepts and actions on its ability toproduce a sentence of two, three, or four elements.3-The linguistic voices pronunciation TestThat measures the child's ability to pronounce all the voicesproperly at the beginning, middle and end of the word, and theprogram provides its services for cases within the society'sprograms and outside.
Overall objective : Remedy the hearing problems and developpronunciation skills for persons with hearing, speech andlanguage problems.
Specific objectives:
.Develop the infrastructure of hearing, speech and language
program in the society.
. Improve the therapeutic services provided for cases registered
that are 68 cases.
. Increase the number of cases of those groups to reach the
maximum of 130 cases per month.
.Train a number of 30 specialized graduates on the new
equipments.
Outputs:
.Availability of professional equipments, which
guarantees the program sustainability after the end ofthe project.
.Achieve a high response rate for therapy, for cases
suffering from disorders of hearing and speech.
.Providing psychological and social support for cases
and their families.Increase the number of specialists, professionals anddevelopers.
A field survey in kindergartens and primary
schools for the early detection of
communication disorders within children.
Registration of detected cases in the target
areas.
Classification of the cases into categories
(simple - medium - irremediable).
Early intervention for therapy of the
classified cases.
Social worker (# 1), audio Specialist (# 1),
specialist in pronunciation (# 1).
Training specialists on the new equipments.
