The origins of Deruta remain partly obscure. Of certainty are its links with Perugia, which has always been a bulwark in the South towards Todi, whose role is still witness to his fortified appearance. In the thirteenth century Deruta has its own constitution, followed in 1465, a new document in the vernacular, which provides for the presence in the castle, as well as a mayor sent to Perugia, four "boni men, elected from among the inhabitants. In the second half of 1400, the town's inhabitants were exterminated by the plague and even brought about a reduction of the walls. Moreover, during the Salt War (1540), Deruta, which had aligned itself against the pope, was pillaged and destroyed. The submission of Perugia to the Church also brought to town a long period of peace, during which the town had the highest development of the manufacture of majolica, activities that, over the centuries, has made known to Deruta in the world.By accessing the old town of Deruta's Gate S. Michael, are immediately visible evidence of old furnaces. In the square Biordo Michelotti face the sober Romanesque-Gothic church of S. Archangel. Is located in front of the Fountain, a polygonal quinqueviri made by the City in 1848.Immediately after opening of Piazza dei Consoli, where is the Municipal Palace of 1300, which are collected in the lobby of archaeological, neolithic and Etruscan. The building also houses the Art Gallery and the Museum of Ceramics. The first is an important collection of paintings from the churches of S. Francis, S. Antonio, of the deceased and the hospital of St. Ripabianca James, a part of the rich collection of Lione Pascoli. You can admire, among other paintings of the of Baciccio, Banner, Love, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and Guido Reni. In seconds you can admire magnificent ceramic works dating from between the Archaic period and our modern times. In front of City Hall is the church of S. Francis, Gothic, from its interior. Adjacent to the church is the former Franciscan convent with an ancient cloister. Down the narrow street Mastro Giorgio is the church of S. Antonio, which preserves important frescoes by Bartolomeo and Gian Battista Caporali.Height of Piazza Cavour is the small church of Our Lady of Divine Love, now known as Our Lady of Cerasa. Along the Tiberina road one sees the small church of Our Lady of Piagge of 1601, whose facade is adorned with a beautiful tiled. Near this church is visited an interesting museum of majolica
