‘Awards are a simple means of recognizing one’s efforts and talent. A movement like Rotaract runs on the voluntary dedication and commitment of its members and thus awarding and rewarding real talents becomes a much greater necessity.

This year the Annual District Rotaract Awards was conducted on 10th July 2010 at D.G. Vaishnav College Auditorium. The day was very special because after the Awards Ceremony was over the Installation of Rtr. PP. Manikandan K. as the District Rotaract Representative for the year 2011-12 and the whole team of District Officials for the year 2011-12.

The awards ceremony saw the presence of Rtn. Suresh Krishna, Managing Direcotr, Isha Homes as the Chief Guest. Rtn. PP. Ganesan K. , Rotaract Chair for 2010-11 graced the occasion. Rtn. PP. Praveen K. Mehra was the Special Guest of Honour for both the Awards and Installation Ceremony. PDRR Sujith Kumar was also present. Rtn. DG. Sampath Kumar inspired the Rotaractors with their presence.

Rtr. PP. Afser Ali B. and Rtr. PP. Yuvabala C. were the recipients of the prestigious Rtr. J.K. Samyuktha Award. Rtr. IPP. Yasin Bijapuri M.A.M. recieved the Best Overall Performer of the Year. Rtr. PP. Ramkumar Raju A. was awarded the Best District Official for the year. Various other awards were also given with respect to the Club Project and Outstanding Performers of the year.

The Installation Ceremony was conducted in a grand manner and saw the launch of many District Projects for the year including the launch of eKTA by Rtn. Praveen K. Mehra. The District Council hopes that the year is productive and the District Theme for the Year 2011-12 ‘Celebrating Differences’ is realised.

Editorial Feature - Rise of the Morning Sun

‘There is always a better way of doing things’ says a learned man. In life we always are bound by the paradox of whether what we have done is the best or not. Man has grown and developed based on this very principle. The spirit and effort of always improving upon his own creations, achievements etc has helped him improve and develop himself. This constant thirst for raising the bar is the main reason behind the evolution of mankind from a small dark cave to high-rises touching the skies.

The spirit of improving oneself is the key to the success of human existence. Complacency is a concept which is against the basic human nature. If we are content with what we are or with we do, we are falling into this trap. Being complacent unfortunately is becoming more of a trend today. We can count in numbers, path-breaking innovations in the fields of science, administration and all other aspects that surround us, which have taken place in this decade. Mediocrity unfortunately is creeping in across all facets of our lives. The urge to go beyond and walk the extra mile is reducing. We have indeed stopping to think out of the box. Today the world is at the verge of an economic meltdown because we are offering the same solutions to different problems. This is just one instance of how unimaginative we as human beings have become.

But, this is where organisations like United Nations, Rotary International etc play a leadership role. We Rotaractors as a part of the wider Rotary Movement can be proud to say that we are at the verge of eradicating polio from the face of the earth. Innovation and kindling of new thought is the cornerstone of Rotary. Such is the foresight of Rotarians that they have a separate avenue of service called ‘New Generations’ which includes within its ambits Rotary Programs like Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange etc. Rotarians realise that we are the future and we shall form the next generation of change agents in society.

Rotaract today is in need of this very nature of forward thinking and a drive to outperform oneself. Our District 3230 Rotaractors have proved time and again that impossible is nothing and always there is a scope to excel in whatever we do. If the few projects conducted in the span of a month, both at the District and Club Level are to go by, we can expect big things from our Rotaractors in months to come. The true spirit of ‘Celebrating Differences’ is being upheld by Rotaractors in our district in the form of collaboration and co-existence and these can go a long way in taking our movement to greater heights.

Let’s remember the story of the evolution of the Cave Man. Let’s outperform ourselves. Let’s build a platform for our future generations so that they can enjoy a better quality of life than ours.

Who was Terry Fox?

Terrance Stanley "Terry" Fox, (July 28, 1958 – June 28, 1981) was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Although the spread of his cancer eventually forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, and ultimately cost him his life but the annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$500 million has been raised in his name.

Fox was a distance runner and basketball player for his University. His right leg was amputated in 1977 after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma a form of cancer, though he continued to run using an artificial leg. In 1980, he began the Marathon of Hope, a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research. Fox hoped to raise one dollar for each of Canada's 24 million people. He began with little fanfare from St. John's City in April and ran the equivalent of a full marathon every day. Fox had become a national star by the time he reached Ontario; he made numerous public appearances in his efforts to raise money. He was forced to end his run outside of Thunder Bay when the cancer spread to his lungs. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Canada by the Canadian Government.

On 17th July 2011, the District Rotaract Council 11-12 held its first Council Meeting. The response to the meeting was tremendous. The venue Rotary Centre, Chennai was full. More than a hundred Rotaractors came for the meeting. Various important aspects such as official launch of various events like Assembly, Stree Suraksha etc took place. Rtr. PDRR. Krishnakumar N. graced the occassion. The DRC Focus discussion was handled by Rtr. ZRR. Praveen T. V. regarding the Four-way Test. The DRC was hosted by DRR Home Club Rotaract Club of Akash

Let’s Walk - Prevention of Hepatitis

The 2nd Meeting of the District Rotaract Council was held on 24th July 2011 at 10.00 A.M. This meeting was a special DRC hosted by the Community Service - Blood Donation Team. The meeting was held at Dr. Sanjeevi Auditorium, VHS Hospital, Adyar, Chennai. Rtn.PP. Ganesan K., Assistant District Governor and Past Rotaract Chairman attended the same. Mr. Rajkumar from the Madras Voluntary Blood Bureau handled the Main Session. Rotaractors were provided snacks in the morning and lunch in the afternoon courtesy Voluntary Health Services Hospital

On 31st July the 3rd DRC Meeting was held at YWCA Auditorium, Egmore, Chennai at 11.00 A.M. The meeting was graced by Rtn. Praveen K. Mehra. This DRC Meeting was hosted by Rotaract Club of Chennai Phoenix. Various Club events were launched at the meeting. Updates on Annual District Rotaract Assembly ‘Siragugal’ and District Directory were given.

On 14th July, Rotary International President Rtn. PDG. Kalyan Banerjee visited our District 3230. At 10.00 A.M., 50 Rotaractors volunteered to donate blood at the VHS-Rotary Central Blood Bank, Adyar, Chennai. RI President Rtn. PDGKalyan Banerjee, District Governor Rtn. PP. Sampath Kumar accompanied by the respective first ladies Ann. Binota and Ann. Dr. Sai Prassanna inspired the Rotaractors with their words. In the evening at 06.00 P.M. Rotaractors participated in the felicitation organised by the Rotary District Administrationin honour of Rtn. Kalyan Banerjee. A copy of Ekta was given to the R.I. President

A Walk was conducted on 28th July 2011 at 07.00 A.M. at Marina Beach, Chennai by Global Hospitals. District Rotaract Council supported the project with massive participation of more than 2000 Rotaractors from various Clubs of our District. The Walk concentrated on creating awareness regarding Hepatitis B. Rtr.IPP. Swathi Sujir was the Project Chairperson. The participants were given T-Shirts and Certificates.
