5 Diet Resolutions
That Are Doomed to Fail
5 Diet Resolutions
That Are Doomed
to Fail
It’s that time of year again—the time we swear to
rev up the ol’ willpower, keep the spoon out of the
Nutella jar, and clean up our eating habits once and
for all. There’s just one tiny little problem: Research
suggests that up a whopping (and pathetic) 88% of
us fail at keeping our New Year’s resolutions.
But what if you really do want to eat healthier in 2016?
And lose weight. How can you make a resolution that
lasts instead of crashing and burning in a heart-shaped
chocolate box come mid-February? We asked some
super smart nutritionists for insight.
Here are, 5 resolutions that are all but doomed to fail,
plus sustainable ones to make instead.
1). “I will Never Eat [insert favorite junk food] again!”
You always want what you can’t have—and those
Doritos you’d always stash in the desk drawer won’t
stop popping into your mind just because you throw the
bag in the trash on January 1.
“A common mistake people make is unobtainable
elimination goals. “You will break this resolution in a
few days, a week, or a month. Most people cannot stay
away from their favorite junk food—and why should
they?”
Better resolution:
Instead, opt for occasional indulgence. “I have a strategy I
call ‘The Rule of 2,’”. “Reduce the behavior to two times a
week: One time is planned and one time is spontaneous.”
That means you schedule a serving of ice cream for every
Monday night, then leave room for a spontaneous ice
cream cone purchase sometime over the rest of the week.
“Indulging twice a week (that’s 104 times in a year!) makes
it hard to think you’re deprived,”. Just be sure you eat
sensible portions and choose products with real-food
ingredients when possible.
Are you Ready to drop those extra pounds you've been carrying around?
Give me 15 to 20 minutes and I'll show you 101 Methods you can use to lose weight fast.
2) “I’m going to cut carbs!”
We tend to think of ‘carbs’ as foods like bread, pasta, and
cake—but they’re not that simple. A carbohydrate is a super
important nutrient found in tons of different foods. Yeah, that
bowl of pasta is composed mainly of carbs, but so is that bowl
of broccoli, and your mid-morning apple. Carbohydrates are
not categorically bad for you. In fact, it’s quite the opposite:
“Resolving to cut out carbs is not a healthy way to go,”.
“Carbs provide an important source of energy and essential
nutrients the body needs.”
Better resolution:
Reframe your thinking on carbs, and don’t banish them
outright. Instead, focus on carb-based foods that are naturally
high in fiber and nutrients. “Think whole grains (quinoa, farro,
steel cut oats), legumes, vegetables, and fruits. And try to
reduce consumption of refined carbs, like the kind found in
soda, fruit juice, bagels, and baked goods, which offer no
additional nutrition for your body. This is a great way to lose
weight.
3) “No more snacking!:
“Every year, I get a handful of new dieters that resolve to kick
off their plans by simply quitting snacking all together. But it
usually backfires. Since you don’t have planned snacks
available, you crave salty and sweet foods instead of healthier
options.
Better resolution:
“Instead of cutting out an afternoon snack entirely, choose a
healthy snack like a small bag of mixed nuts or whole grain
crackers and guacamole. I suggests snacks that are made with
real ingredients and whole foods. Think grapes and sliced
turkey, not a processed 100-calorie pack of “lite” cookies. And
stick to around 140 to 180 calories per snack.
Anything less than that and you might not actually quell your
hunger pangs. Anything more, and that snack starts looking like
a fourth meal.
4) “I’m going on a juice cleanse!”
Juice cleanses sound virtuous and wonderful—and they will
result in quick weight loss and drops in blood pressure, insulin
production, and blood sugar. But they’ll also mess with your
mood and hormones, drain your energy, sap your metabolism,
and cause you to lose muscle mass. Plus, as soon as it’s over,
you’ll gain the lost weight right back.
Better resolution:
Let go of the notion that you need to undergo an expensive,
restrictive juice cleanse to “detox” your body—your
internal organs already have detoxing on lockdown. Instead
of laser-focusing on eliminating mysterious “toxins” from
the body, focus on cleaning up your diet, incorporating as
much whole, unprocessed food as you can. No clue how to
start? Here are our 101 Natural Weight loss Methods to
start losing 10Lbs Now. Start eating clean even when the
task feels insurmountable.
5) “I’m quitting added sugar cold turkey!”
Sugar is the new health bogeyman, and for good reason: The
sweet stuff has negative effects on just about every system in
your body. But outright elimination of sugar will only leave you
craving it, like, every moment of every day.
Better resolution:
“You can’t simply cut the sugar without a game plan for
sweetening with alternatives. Try swapping in a low- or no-
calorie natural sweetener, like monkfruit or stevia, in place of
some sugar. Stop buying pre-sweetened packaged foods
(yogurt, oatmeal, baked goods) and make them on your own,
sweetening with only fruit or fruit purees instead. Remember
that small changes can make a huge difference in the long run.
Eliminating just 2 measly teaspoons of sugar a day amounts to
saving 11,680 calories over the course of a year.
