PROGRESS ON THE PATHWAY

• Started nearly 10 years ago

• Informed by Shaping the best research professionals consultation carried out by UK Clinical Research Collaboration

• Intention to develop a pathway to offer nurses, midwives and AHPs the opportunity to pursue a clinical academic career

CHALLENGES IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE PATHWAY

• Funding, mentorship and managerial support were early challenges identified in the consultation

• But implementation saw success across the awards at Master’s level, PhD, Clinical Lectureship and Senior Clinical Lectureship during the first 3 rounds of the scheme that were funded

PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE

• Opportunity now in place to pursue a clinical academic career

• Increase to the professions’ evidence base

• Impact on quality of care and outcomes for service users and patients

HEE MANDATE 2013-2015

• To develop a more flexible workforce that is able to respond to the changing patterns of service and embrace research and innovation

• To support clinical academic careers for health professionals and seek to increase numbers of staff with a proper understanding of research and its role in improving health outcomes

ONGOING PROGRESS

• Internships now available

• Robust and developing mentorship scheme

• Increase in quality and demand by applicants

• Individuals pursuing the pathway

• Success of awardees in funding, development of research programmes, influencing best practice and leadership

AND NOW TO THE FUTURE

• Still need to develop opportunities for those who are excellent but not in research-intensive institutions

• Remain challenges with managerial support – this is a key objective for CAHPR

• CAHPR has an ongoing remit to support research capacity-building for AHPs, to promote research collaborations and for strategic influencing
