Exposure to natural sounds may help ease stress at work and boost productivity. Businesses with an open office plan often use “masking systems” to increase background noise and reduce distracting sounds, like phone conversations, that would normally be blocked by the presence of walls. Investigators wanted to know what type of masking noise worked the best and found that natural sounds, such as the sound of a mountain stream, were random enough not to become a distraction and also improved the mood and productivity of employees. Acoustical Society of America, May 2015 Health Alert : Many Americans Have Dangerous Combo of Heart Risk Factors. According to new research, more than 30% of adults in the United States (US) have a combination of health problems, known as metabolic syndrome, that increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a combination of conditions that include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, elevated blood sugar levels, and a larger waist circumference. The researchers found that the rate of this syndrome increases dramatically with age, as 50% of people 60 and older in the US have metabolic syndrome. Senior study author Dr. Robert Wong notes, "That's concerning, because we know the population of the US is aging… I think it will potentially place a huge burden on our health care system." Journal of the American Medical Association, May 2015 Diet : Prepare Fresh Produce Safely. The safe preparation of fruits and vegetables can help protect your family from harmful germs. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends rinsing fresh produce under cool water before eating, using a produce brush to clean firm produce such as melons or cucumbers (to keep germs away from the blade of the knife as it cuts through), throwing away the outermost leaves of a head of lettuce, having separate cutting boards for meat and produce, and cooking alfalfa, clover, and other raw sprouts before eating. Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, May 2015 Exercise : Physical Exercise Aids in Recovery from Chemotherapy. Among a sample of children who underwent chemotherapy as part of their cancer treatment, participating in a six-month supervised exercise program resulted in improvements in both bone density and bone mineral content that were not observed in children in the control group who did not exercise at all. This is especially important as previous research indicates an association between chemotherapy treatment and reduced bone density. Acta Paediatrica, May 2015 Chiropractic : Mobilization with Movement Effective for Common Shoulder Condition. A randomized study involving 42 patients found mobilization with movement to be superior to sham manual contact (no mobilization) in regards to the treatment of shoulder impingement syndrome. The study's primary outcome measures included pain intensity, pain during active range of motion, and maximal active range of motion. The findings support this commonly used chiropractic technique in the management of shoulder impingement syndrome. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, April 2015 Wellness/Prevention : New Blood Test Can Diagnose Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the most common gastroenterological disorder, can now be diagnosed with a new blood test. The new blood test identifies anti-Cdtb and anti- vinculin antibodies that elevate in patients with IBS. This will allow for early diagnosis for millions of individuals affected by this disorder. Test creator Dr. Mark Pimentel comments, "Having an early diagnosis means patients can avoid years of invasive tests and visits to specialists that often leave them with more questions than answers. With these new blood tests, many patients will now be able to proceed right to therapy for their condition." PLOS ONE, May 2015 Quote : “A concept is a brick. It can be used to build a courthouse of reason. Or it can be thrown through the window.” ~ Gilles Deleuze
