What is Malaria?
• The malaria is a Mosquito infectious disease affecting humans and other animals.
• It normally causes fever, headache and in severe cases coma or death.
• The malaria transmission is caused by a mosquito bite although we can avoid it by using mosquito nets and mosquito repellent.
• Malaria can also be transmitted by a pregnant women to her baby and by blood transmissions.
Who/Where does it affect?
• This affects more than 100 countries.• Each year there are between 300-500 million
cases of Malaria, killing over 3 million people around the world.
• Approximately 2,23% of the deaths worldwide are from Malaria.
• 90% of the deaths are from Africa, and affecting mostly children below five years old.

How to cure and prevent it?
• Methods used to prevent the spread of this illness and cure are medical drugs and mosquito eradication.
• The cost of aid per year is estimated to be approximately between 3-6 billions US dollars.
New discovery
• In the nineties Manuel Elkin Patarroyo (from Colombia) discovered a vaccine, although it was only effective in less than 30% of the cases.
• But, in the past days there has been a new discovery that brings hope to the people, this is because the new vaccine will be effective in more than 50% of the cases.
Why do we need to know this?
• This great scientific and medical advance is extremely important because it saves millions of lives each year
• It is also important because it helps us see what is going on around the world.
