Professor John Tagg’s Story
• At the age of 12, John Tagg contracted an especially bad case of strep throat, one that led to rheumatic fever
• In order to prevent a recurrence of strep, John’s doctor then put him on a course of antibiotics every day for 10 years
• John Tagg’s childhood experience inspired him to devote his life to the study of friendly probiotic bacteria that can prevent strep throat and other infections entering through the mouth
• After 30 years of research, he found it and named it BLIS K12
3
Infection Protection Starts in the Mouth
• The skin and mucous membranes are constantly in contact with micro-organisms and provide a breeding ground for them
• Micro-organisms which normal reside on the human body are referred to as the normal flora or “indigenous microbiota”
• The oral cavity (mouth) & throat contain some of the most vast and varied micro-organisms found on the entire human body
Normal flora of the mouth
4
Location of the human normal microbial flora
Each of these areas of the body contain their own micro-environments and various populations of microbes
Normal flora perform protective roles on the human body
5
Infection Protection Starts in the Mouth • Bacteria are the most numerous of all the types of microbes
living in the human mouth
• It has been estimated there are over 100 million bacteria in every millilitre (1/5th tsp) of saliva
• The mouth serves as an important portal of entry into the body, providing access for a wide variety of microbes both HEALTHFUL and HARMFUL!
6
Infection Protection Starts in the Mouth • Conditions arise that change the normal flora (mostly bacteria) in the mouth & throat
• These conditions can include:– Viral & bacterial infections– Candida & thrush– Tooth extraction– Stress– Pregnancy– Hospitalization– Chlorhexidine mouth rinses: Cepacol, Lavoris, Scope, Oral B– Antibiotics and other medications
Pathogenic “bad” bacteria

About Probiotics • Probiotics (pro = for, bios = life) are beneficial live bacteria
that help the body deal with pathogenic (bad) bacteria
• According to Health Canada and the World Health Organization (WHO), probiotic microorganisms “when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit”
• Oral (for the mouth) probiotics protect against dangerous bacteria that cause strep throat and other sore throats, earaches, upper respiratory infections and halitosis (bad breath)
9
Professor John R. Tagg’s Research on Probiotics • Microbiology Professor John R. Tagg PhD. from Otago
University in New Zealand has spent his life researching probiotic bacteria that enhance oral health & fight infection
• Professor Tagg discovered certain “friendly” bacteria produce unique substances (BLIS) that protect against infections in the mouth, throat, nose, ears and upper respiratory tract
• His work focuses on Streptococcus salivarius - the most abundant bacteria in the mouth
For more info on Prof. Tagg’s story see: http://culturedcare.com/blog/page/2/
10
What is Streptococcus salivarius?• Streptococcus salivarius is a strain of
naturally-occurring bacteria that
normally resides in the mouths
of healthy people
• Its presence in the mouth is one
indication of healthy immune function
and natural resistance to infections
that enter through the mouth
11
What is BLIS?
• BLIS is an acronym for Bacteriocin-Like Inhibitory Substance
• Certain types of bacteria, especially Streptococcus salivarius (S. salivarius), naturally produce BLIS
• BLIS are peptide and protein substances that block infection-causing bacteria

About BLIS K12™ • BLIS K12™ was discovered by Professor John R Tagg
• BLIS K12 is a special, “advanced” BLIS-producing probiotic strain of Streptococcus salivarius, a “friendly” species of bacteria
• BLIS K12™ fights infections where they most often enter the body – in the mouth & may be responsible for cellular repair after a cell has been damaged by a pathogen – UBC research
• Professor Tagg’s own personal story of having strep-induced rheumatic fever as a teenager fuelled his life-long research

BLIS K12™ – Nature’s Antimicrobial Punch
• S. salivarius BLIS K12™ is an advanced probiotic
• BLIS K12™ actively produces targeted antibacterial proteins when it is under threat from a potential disease-causing bacteria
Bacteriocin
BLIS = Bacteriocin-Like Inhibitory Substance
15
What does BLIS K12™do as a probiotic?
• BLIS K12™ “colonizes” as friendly bacteria and lives in the mouth and throat
• BLIS K12™ boosts immunity and protects the mouth, ears, nose and throat against infection
• BLIS K12™ specifically fights infection by Streptococcus pyogenes, the pathogenic bacteria that cause strep throat which can lead to rheumatic fever and scarlet fever
• BLIS K12™ also protects against other types of sore throats as well as otitis media (ear aches), sinus and upper respiratory infections
