Technique number one is called freefall. All you need for this creativity boosting exercise is a blank sheet of paper and a pen. Just start writing whatever comes to mind. If your mind is blank start making squiggles, ellipses or anything until your mind starts working, Then just write whatever comes to mind. Do this for 10 minutes. Often this is all I need in order to warm up.

Technique number 2 is a slightly more directed version of the freefall. Here you can start with any open-ended statement, much like the compositions you were given in school.

Here are a few examples:

“Once upon a time....”“In the beginning there was.....”“It all ended the day.....”

Again, just write for 5-10 minutes to get your creative right-brain warmed up.

Technique number 3 is a favorite of mine. It’s called Creative Brainstorming and it’s basically creating a mind-map around one word. It’s a great way to warm up about one topic. Here’s how to do it.

Technique number 4 is a combination of the freefall and the mindmap. Start off by brainstorming and creating a mindmap and then move into a directed freefall. Choose one word from the mindmap and start freefalling. When you get stuck, choose another word and write.

You can create several mindmaps around different aspects of the same project, for example one mindmap around the benefits, another around the proof and so on.

The 5th technique I learned from Lorrie Morgan Ferrero. She suggests getting a catalog from a website that sells stock photos. Then once a week or whenever you need to get your creative juices flowing, choose an image and write a short one page story about it.

Try these ideas the next time you need a creativity boost.
