The aim of the Conference was to provide a platform for eminent researchers,

academicians, physicians, traditional medical practitioners, manufacturers & exporters of herbal

products, members from the corporate sector, marketing consultants and other organizations

from all over the world. The programme was comprised with plenary lectures by invited

speakers and oral/poster/ video presentations, practical demonstrations and exhibitions.

Therefore, this conference offered an important opportunity to approach crucial challenges for

the future of the Traditional Medicine (TM).

It is glad to say that this year we were strengthen with wider international participation

from countries of India, Australia, German, Pakistan, Thailand, South Korea, Japan,

Bangladesh, Iran, West Indies, Greece, United Kingdom, France and United states. Further

direct involvement with two major Universities of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India

and Gujarat University, Gujarat, India were highly appreciated.

ICAUST-2015 was to be forum for a total of 297 presentations which had been

thoroughly screened by peer-reviewing. These were presented in 30 parallel sessions during the

proceedings. This was evidence to the strong research culture and enthusiasm existing in the

Institute of Indigenous Medicine.

During this international conference AYU-EXPO trade exhibition was organized to

facilitate private public partnership. This meet was an ideal for business negotiations and deals

for the products gaining exposure to international market. Also it helped to make avenues for

increase import & export trading of herbal ingredients and raw materials.

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

OPENING CEREMONY OF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Inauguration of Conference was organized at LibertyBall Room, Ramada Hotel,

Colombo. It was grand welcome by group of traditional dancers in to the inauguration hall and

started with National Anthem and lighting of Oil Lamp during the Inauguration followed by

speeches by our esteemed guests.

DR. S.D. Hapuarachchi, Chief Organizer, ICAUST-2015, Director, Institute of

Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo delivered welcomed the gathering and Guest of

Honor Senior. Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake, Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo,in his

address has explained about the “Importance of the Traditional Medicine for upgrade the health

system” and Guest speakers from India, delivered an inspiring talk, and stressed the need to

develop Indo-Sri Lankan relationship for develop Traditional Medicine system.

Dr. R.D.H. Kulathunga, Organizing Chairperson, ICAUST-2015, Additional Director

(Actg),Post Graduate Section, Institute of Indigenous Medicine has proposed formal vote of

thanks. She thanked all for participating, supporting and guiding them for making the ICAUST

2015a grand success.

Dr. Pathirage Kamal Perera, Organizing Secretary - Ayurveda and Dr. M.S.M. Shiffa,

Organizing Secretary – Unani of ICAUST 2015, Dr. (Ms) J.M. Dahanayake (Joint Secretary –

Ayurveda), Dr. (Ms) A.H.A. Fazeenah (Joint Secretary – Unani)have taken the leading role

in organizing this function a grand success.

Delegates, speakers and presenters included Academicians, Ayurveda and Allopathic

physicians, NGO‟s, Students, Policy makers, Government and officials as well as common

public participated actively in the ceremony.

The Opening Ceremony also ended with Sri Lankan traditional dance followed by

Dinner.

The Conference was a unique event that happened for the second time bringing the students,

academicians, teachers, researchers and accredited scientist on one side; Physicians of systems of

Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha, traditional and tribal, Allopathic and cultivators, manufacturers &

exporters of herbal products and institutional stakeholders representing government and non-

government/civil society organizations on the other side representing numerous countries on one

platform. It is unanimously recommended that such events shall be conducted at least on annual

basis to bring out recommendations for upgrade the traditional medicine sector and other stake

holders with scientific background for improved human health.

From the speeches and deliberations during the conference, the following emerged as

recommendations for the 3rd International Conference -2015.

1. Traditional Medical system of Sri Lanka should be upgraded and coexist with Western

Medical System as a primary health care as declared by the World Health Organization in their

Traditional health policy.

2. Indigenous Traditional Medicine Knowledge of Sri Lanka to be documented and

digital library should be developedprotecting intellectual property rights.

3. Identify hot spots for medicinal plant conservation and management in the forest and

agro-forestry ecosystems extending the bio-village concept.

4. Initiate and promote research for enhancement of quality and standardization in herbal

medicine, formulations and products so as to increase the confidence level of consumers

globally. For this purpose meeting was held by the Dr. S.D. Hapuarchchi, Director, Institute of

Indigenous Medicine with Prof. V.K. Joshi, Chairman, Ayurveda Pharmacopeia Commission,

Ministry of Ayush, Government of India and Dr. P.K. Perera, Head, Department of

DravyagunaVignana for revised and /or amend current Ayurveda Pharmacopeia of Sri

Lanka.Ayurveda Pharmacopeia was not revised since 1967. Prof V.K. Joshi agreed to collaborate

in this project and it was suggested to achieve the approval from the Ayurveda Commissioner for

activate this project. Finally it was decided to initiate this project under the purview of

Department of DravyagunaVignana, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo.

5. Traditional medicine awareness campaigns to be conducted annually in all the network

participating countries for all levels from students to commercial users and researchers.

6. Educational and training modules to be developed suitable for students, teachers,

cultivators, tribal healers and herbal product manufacturers collaborate with participated

countries. Especially participants from India emphasized that to develop Memorandum of

understandings in between their Universities focus on above issues.

7. The strategies to be developed to initiate traditional medicine exchange programs both

within/across Asia with other nations.

8. It was unanimously decided to organize 4th

conference on ICAUST- 2016.
