Community Health Centers:Making a Difference
Community health centers (CHCs) provide primary care to more than 20 million patients in more than 8,000 locations nationwide.
CHCs now serve 1 in 7 uninsured people nationally, and 1 in 5 of the low income uninsured. From 2000 to present, the number of patients receiving treatment at health centers increased by 62 percent.
CHCs provide efficient, cost-effective care that can reduce or eliminate the need for more costly emergency room visits or avoidable hospital stays.
CHCs emphasize preventive care and chronic disease management for conditions like diabetes, asthma, heart and lung disease, depression, cancer and HIV/AIDS.
According to the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), communities served by a health center experience reduced infant mortality by as much as 40 percent, and also experience reduced rates of low birth weight.
According to NACHC, CHCs reduce overall healthcare costs and save the Medicaid program as much as 30 percent while still delivering high quality care to their Medicaid patients.
A recent study found that federally funded community health centers perform equal to or better than private practices on a number of quality-care measures.
