According to the CDC: Overweight- having excess body weight for a particular height from

fat, muscle, bone, water, or a combination of these factors.

Obesity- having excess body fat.

Result of “caloric imbalance”— Too few calories expended for the amount of calories consumed

Affected by various genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors.

In 2008, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. Children aged 6–11 years in the U.S. increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 20% in

2008.

Adolescents aged 12–19 years increased from 5% to 18% over the same period. http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/obesity/facts.htm http://www.ronjones.org/Weblinks/childobesity.html

According to the CDC: Type 2 diabetes-

The body develops a resistance to insulin and no longer can use it properly.

The pancreas loses its ability to produce sufficient amounts of insulin to regulate blood sugar.

More children with type 2 diabetes have been diagnosed even though it is seen in adults over the age of 40.

Factors- Obesity, Low physical activity among young people, Exposure to diabetes in utero (in the womb)

According to cancer.org:

Physical activity helps prevent cancer- 38% of adults in the U.S. do not engage in any physical activity in their leisure time. A child’s increased use of technology combined with a lack of finances in

schools for gym classes or nutrition education programs is a major concern

Only 1 in 8 adults does any kind of vigorous physical activity in their leisure time for the recommended 5 times a week. Their children learn that inactivity is okay and therefore they do not exercise

either

Inactivity/poor nutrition are factors in the growing obesity problem.
