To qualifyfor certification or recertification, candidates must meet the following criteria:1. At the time of application, candidates must have been employed in clinical, supervisory, administrative,teaching/education or research capacities in an institutional or private practice setting for a minimum of two (2)years full-time, or its part-time equivalent of 4000 hours, within the past five (5) years in GI/endoscopy.a. The major component (practice domains and specific tasks) of the current role delineations for thegastroenterology RN is presented in Appendice B.What Is the Examination Like?The RN examinations each consist of 175 multiple choice questions, 150 multiple choice questions are scoredand 25 are experimental questions used to validate for future exams. Each question has 4 choices with onecorrect answer. All examination items are written by certified individuals with expertise in the field ofgastroenterology and/or endoscopy nursing practice. Before an item is considered for inclusion on anexamination, it is referenced, reviewed, and validated by the ABCGN Item Writers Committee. Finally, eachitem is edited by Castle for proper test item construction, grammatical correctness, and clarity. The proportionof questions from each practice domain included on the examinations is based on the relative frequency andimportance of each domain and task as determined in the role delineation surveys. At least one form of identification must contain aphotograph. If you have not previously submitted a photocopy of your license, bring your license with you tothe test site.Testing Center RegulationsThe following regulations will be observed at each testing center to insure that all candidates take theexamination under uniform conditions. These regulations will be read at each test site and proctors areinstructed not to admit candidates who arrive after the examination instructions have been read. Since theinstructions must be read and the test materials distributed prior to the official start time for the examinationperiod, be sure to arrive at the test location at least one-half hour prior to the official start time to allow yourselfample time.Calculators and reference materials are not permitted in the examination room.Cell phones, pagers or other electronic devices are not permitted in the examination room.No books, scratch paper, or notes may be brought into the examination room.Backpacks, fanny packs and purses must be kept in a designated spot in the examination room. If a test centersstatus is questionable due to severe weather or a natural disaster, the examination administration may becancelled. If you are unsure as to whether or not your test site is open, contact CASTLE at 919-572-6880.If You Have a ProblemThe ABCGN testing company, CASTLE Worldwide, contracts for test sites and proctors. Every attempt ismade to insure that test sites are convenient, comfortable, and conducive to testing and that proctors areknowledgeable and competent. Occasionally, minor problems may occur. Any candidate who experiences aproblem with the suitability of a test site or with the performance of a proctor should notify CASTLE in writingwithin 10 business days of the test date, with a copy to ABCGN, so that appropriate corrective action can betaken for the benefit of future candidates.Examination SecurityAny candidate determined by the chief examiner or proctors to be giving or receiving assistance of any kindduring the examination will be required to turn in his/her test materials immediately and will be escorted fromthe examining room. The candidates answer sheet will not be scored and the incident will be reported to theABCGN. Any candidate who removes or attempts to remove test materials from the test site will be prosecutedby the ABCGN to the full extent of the law.Examination ScoringABCGN examinations are electronically scored by the testing company. For this reason, it is critical that youcomplete your answer sheet according to the instructions provided by the chief examiner at the test site. Youmust use a No. 2 pencil. Please bring two No. 2 pencils with erasers to the exam with you. Pencils will not beavailable at the site.When Can You Expect Results?CASTLE will mail examination results to you within five (5) weeks following the test administration. Thescore report will be mailed to the address provided on your completed examination application. If you do notreceive a score report within six (6) weeks after the date of the examination, please call CASTLE at 919-572-6880 to verify your address and to request a duplicate report. For a duplicate score report at any other timethere is a fee of $15.00Test ScoresA scale score of 450 is required to pass.Scale ScoringA scale score is a mathematical conversion of the raw score, expressed in such a way that the range of scores isfrom 200-800 with a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of 100. The ABCGN uses a scale score so that it canpublish a passing point score. The raw score passing point differs from one version of the test to another and,therefore, can not be published until the specific version of the test to be administered has been completed andthe passing point determined. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and other well-known standardized tests alsoexpress results as scale scores for the same reason.Exam Versions 6 7. For reasons of test security, each time the test is offered, a different version is administered. These versions aremade up of questions, randomly selected from an approved question bank by computer according to the contentspecified in the test plan. While the general content and the proportion of items on one subject or another isalways the same, one version of the examination may be slightly more or less difficult depending upon thespecific questions included. The raw score passing point for the examination is set by a detailed review of thecurrent version of the test using accepted psychometric methods. It may differ by a few points from version toversion. The scale score passing point, however, is always the same.Score ReportYour individual score report will contain your total score and sub-scores for comparison with those of thecandidate population. These sub-scores are derived separately from the total scale score because of differencesin the number of items from each practice domain included in the test specification. For this reason, the sub-scores do not add up to or average out to the total scale score.Role FeedbackA Role Feedback can be purchased by writing to the ABCGN Testing Office c/o CASTLE. The Role Feedbackis a raw score report which details your performance by the tasks represented on the test blueprint. If you donot pass the examination, this report will give you additional information about the areas where you may needmore work or study.
