2. Background InformationThe American Board of Certification for Gastroenterology Nurses is a volunteer nonprofit organization. Itspurpose is to maintain and improve the knowledge, understanding, and skill of nurses in the fields ofgastroenterology/endoscopy by developing and administering a certification program. Certification is avoluntary process by which a non-governmental agency, such as ABCGN, validates an individualsqualifications and knowledge in a specific area of professional practice based on a set of pre-determinedstandards. In the case of ABCGN certification, the Certifying Board is validating your qualifications andknowledge as a nurse in the field of gastroenterology. The purposes of certification for gastroenterology nurses include: Demonstrating accountability to the general public for gastroenterology specialty practice; Enhancing quality patient care; Recognizing professional nurses who have met an accepted level of experience and demonstrated a standardof knowledge in gastroenterology/endoscopy practice; Promoting personal satisfaction for professional nurses; Providing employers with a means of identifying professionals who have met a standard of achievement.Candidates become certified by successfully completing an examination which has been validated according toaccepted psychometric criteria. ABCGN employs a testing company to assist with development and validationof the examination and to oversee the administration of the exam in various locations around the country.General questions related to the certification process should be addressed to: ABCGN 401 N. Michigan AvenueChicago, IL 60611-42671-800-245-SGNA, Option 3FAX 312-673-6723 E-mail: [email protected] on-site administration of the ABCGN certification examinations is conducted by CASTLE Worldwide, Inc.(CASTLE). Questions relating to testing, including specific locations of examinations, receipt of AdmissionTickets, time schedules for testing, etc. should be addressed to: CASTLE Worldwide, Inc. 900 Perimeter Park Drive Suite G Morrisville, NC 27560 919-572-6880919-361-2426 (fax)Certification by ExaminationThe ABCGN certification examination for Registered Nurses is a four-hour written test consisting of 175multiple choice questions, 150 multiple choice questions are scored and 25 are experimental questions used tovalidate for future exams. The exam is based on a role delineation studies for Registered Nurses. The roledelineation is a survey of practitioners which define the scope of practice and the knowledge and skills requiredto function as a gastroenterology RN. The examination is designed to test a sample of content from the full2 3. range of knowledge and the complete inventory of skills required of gastroenterology RNs. It is written bycertified practitioners, edited, and validated by a professional testing company.RecertificationGastroenterology certification is granted for a period of five years. The certification period begins with the datecertification or recertification is granted (the exam date or the deadline for submission of recertification bycontact hours) and ends on December 31 five years later; i.e. recertification granted as of 5/31/03 is validthrough 12/31/08. For more information regarding recertification contact ABCGN to receive recertificationapplication instructions at 800-245-7462 option 3 or go online to www.abcgn.org.Certification Eligibility RequirementsABCGN certification is open to Registered Nurses currently or recently engaged in GI/endoscopy. This document was created by a panel of expert gastroenterology/endoscopyprofessionals currently engaged in practice and then validated by the gastroenterology/endoscopy nursingcommunity. The major component (practice domains and specific tasks) of the current role delineations for thegastroenterology RN is presented in Appendice B.What Is the Examination Like? The RN examinations each consist of 175 multiple choice questions, 150 multiple choice questions are scoredand 25 are experimental questions used to validate for future exams. Each question has 4 choices with onecorrect answer. All examination items are written by certified individuals with expertise in the field ofgastroenterology and/or endoscopy nursing practice. Before an item is considered for inclusion on anexamination, it is referenced, reviewed, and validated by the ABCGN Item Writers Committee. Finally, eachitem is edited by Castle for proper test item construction, grammatical correctness, and clarity. The proportionof questions from each practice domain included on the examinations is based on the relative frequency andimportance of each domain and task as determined in the role delineation surveys. The test percentage for theABCGN RN examination is listed in Appendix A. Sample questions representative of those that may appear on 3 4. the ABCGN examinations are provided in Appendix C. The sample questions do not reflect the full range ofcontent or all the levels of difficulty of questions appearing on the examinations.Preparing for the ExaminationThe ABCGN neither sponsors nor endorses test preparation or review courses for the certification examinations.SGNA, as well as some SGNA regional organizations do offer review courses. For a duplicate score report at any other timethere is a fee of $15.00Test ScoresA scale score of 450 is required to pass.Scale ScoringA scale score is a mathematical conversion of the raw score, expressed in such a way that the range of scores isfrom 200-800 with a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of 100. The ABCGN uses a scale score so that it canpublish a passing point score. The raw score passing point differs from one version of the test to another and, therefore, can not be published until the specific version of the test to be administered has been completed andthe passing point determined. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and other well-known standardized tests alsoexpress results as scale scores for the same reason.Exam Versions 6 7. For reasons of test security, each time the test is offered, a different version is administered. These versions aremade up of questions, randomly selected from an approved question bank by computer according to the contentspecified in the test plan. While the general content and the proportion of items on one subject or another isalways the same, one version of the examination may be slightly more or less difficult depending upon thespecific questions included. The raw score passing point for the examination is set by a detailed review of thecurrent version of the test using accepted psychometric methods. It may differ by a few points from version toversion. The scale score passing point, however, is always the same.Score ReportYour individual score report will contain your total score and sub-scores for comparison with those of thecandidate population. These sub-scores are derived separately from the total scale score because of differencesin the number of items from each practice domain included in the test specification. For this reason, the sub-scores do not add up to or average out to the total scale score.Role FeedbackA Role Feedback can be purchased by writing to the ABCGN Testing Office c/o CASTLE. The Role Feedbackis a raw score report which details your performance by the tasks represented on the test blueprint. If you donot pass the examination, this report will give you additional information about the areas where you may needmore work or study. The fee for this report is $45.00 and can be purchased through: CASTLE Worldwide, Inc. 900 Perimeter Park Drive Suite G Morrisville, NC 27560 919-572-6880919-361-2426 (fax)FeesThe entire certification exam fee is due in U.S. dollars and must accompany the completed application.
