As the world of dentistry continues to evolve, taking pictures for documentation and treatmentpurposes has evolved greatly from merely clickinga camera at a patient’s teeth, to getting accuratevisual information on everything that goes on in apatient’s mouth, be it the different contours of thecentra incisors to the angle of an impacted wisdomtooth.

Acquiring such information from a picturehowever requires a camera that allows suchprecise details to be highlighted. With the everimproving technology in dental photography, clinics should consider the following beforepurchasing a dental camera:

Will the camera be for teaching, or fordocumentation purposes? In teaching, a simplerlower-end camera would suffice, whereas fordocumenting aesthetics and complicated casesa higher-end camera would be considered thebare minimum.

Purpose

There are 3 main types of Dental Cameras:

1. Point and Shoot (lower-end)2. Fixed Lens (medium-range)3 – Professional with Interchangeable Lens

Camera Type

Lenses do not move, and zoom is unavailable.Details are better than an average camera;however visibility past the first premolars willsuffer or will not be visible at all.

Point and Shoot (lower-end)

These cameras have lenses that can zoomwithin a specific range and can better catchdetails all the way to the Third Molars.

Fixed Lens (medium-range)

As with most professional photography cameras, professional dental cameras come with an arrayof different lenses for different requirements.- Macro lenses allow enlargement of the pictureto an incredible size to catch minor details, andinterchangeable flashes allow for differentlighting requirements.

Professional withInterchangeable Lens

If your clinic has a good camera and needs topurchase new add-on such as a new lens or anew flash, always ensure that it is compatiblewith your current equipment. Not all cameramanufacturing companies’ equipment arecompatible with each other.

Previous Equipment

There are two types of flash:

1 – Point Light2 – Ring Light

The Flash

This is the usual for point-and-click cameras. The flash is located behind the lens, and maycause shadowing. However it enhances thecontours on teeth and accentuates the incisalline.

Point Light

The flash is located around the lens. Thisincreases the light on the picture, and flattensthe image to give clear details. This is best usedwhen minor details are required and largesurface areas are being photographed.

Ring Light

As technology continues to advance, professional cameras are getting cheaper andbecome more affordable to most clinics. Whilethe fixed lens camera is more affordable, thedifference between a fixed lens and aprofessional camera is decreasing.

Price

Should your clinic require anew camera, it may be wise toinvest in a professionalcamera for the long term.
