Strength vs. Power Strength

Strength is the amount of force a muscle or group of muscle can exerts against an external load- a barbell in case of weight lifting.

In strength speed of the movement is not imp.

Ex. – squats, shoulder presses, pull ups, bench press

Power Power is a force developed

quickly and combines strength and speed.

Power = strength *speed EX.- depth jump, hardle

Manual muscle testing is a procedure for the

evaluation of the function and strength of individual muscle and muscle groups based on effective performance of movement in relation to the force of gravity and manual resistance.

To determine the extent and degree of muscular

weakness resulting from disease, injury or disuse.

The records obtained from these tests provide a base for planning therapeutic procedures and periodic re-testing.

Muscle testing is an imp tool for all members of the rehabilitation team.

Pts. With history at risk of having

cardiovascular problems. Abdominal surgery or herniation of abdominal

wall to avoid stress on the abdominal wall. Fatigue exacerbate the pt’s condition.

patient with extreme debility, for ex. Malnutrition, malignancy and severe COPD.

Extra care must be taken where resisted movements might aggravate the

condition

To test 1RM for single or multiple muscle groups

choose the initial weight close to the below maximum lifting capacity.

Weight is progressively added on subsequent attempts until the person reaches max. lift capacity. The weight increments between 1to5 kg depending on the muscle group evaluated.

Dividing the 1RM score by body weight assesses the relative muscular strength.
