Anthropometric TestsBody Fat & Blood Pressure

Aim – To be able to carry out precise health related anthropometric tests on a client and give appropriate feedback.

Objectives – To demonstrate the ability to measure body fat percentages in 2 ways and to correctly take blood pressure.

Page 3: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

Last Session you learnt how to do the following tests

Measuring height & weight Working out BMI Waist to hip Ratio Giving feedback on results

Page 4: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

More common techniques used:Hydrostatic weighingSkinfold thickness Bioelectrical impedance

Page 5: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4
Page 6: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

Skin fold fat thickness is measured to obtain an estimate of the percentage of the overall body mass that is fat.

Page 7: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

1 - Make measurements from the right side of the body.

2 - Mark the skinfold site (once competent this will not be necessary) with a pen, using tape measure or using anatomical landmarks to get correct position.

Page 8: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

Grip the skinfold firmly between finger and thumb and pull the fold slightly away from the underlying tissue. The amount of tissue elevated must be sufficient to form a fold with approximately parallel sides.

Page 9: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

The calipers are placed along the fold and 1 cm below the point of grip.

Do NOT let the fold go, but wait 2-4 seconds and note the reading obtained.

The result should be recorded to the nearest 0.2mm

The Front of upper arm (Biceps) is located

halfway between the shoulder and elbow joints.

The back of upper arm (Triceps) is located

halfway between the shoulder (acromiom Process – boney bit on top of shoulder) and elbow joints.

Locate the bottom of the shoulder blade then

thumb measure below the shoulder blade (Subscapular). The skinfold is taken at a 45° angle.

Waist (Suprailiac) is located just above the iliac crest, the protrusion of the hip bone, a little towards the front from the side of the waist. The skinfold is taken horizontal.

EXAMPLE – 35 Year Old Male weighing 78.6kg

Biceps 7.6 Triceps 9.4 Subscapular 15.6 Suprailiac 23.5

First Total the 4 measurements: 7.6 + 9.4 + 15.6 + 23.5 = 56.1

Check Tables for a 35 yr Male 56.1 (pg 30-33) Result is a Body Fat Estimate of 22.73%

Page 15: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

Fat Weight = Body Weight x Fat %78.6 (body weight) x 22.73% (fat

percentage) Divided by 100 = 17.86 KgOur male has 17.86 Kg of fat on his body.

Page 16: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

Lean Body Weight – Fat % = Lean Tissue

78.6 (body weight) – 17.86 = 60.74 Kg

This is a good method for client wishing to put on muscle mass.

Page 17: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

How much fat must this man lose to meet the ideal of 19%? (he is now 23%)

60.74 (lean weight) divided by 0.81 = 74.98 Kg

78.6 (total body weight) – 74.98 (lean body weight) = 3.62 kg

This man must lose that amount to bring him to 19%!!!

Page 18: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

You now know how to complete body fat % using calipers.

You can demonstrate the ability to locate sites and carry out using the correct procedures.

You can calculate the fat and lean body mass from your findings.

Page 19: Anthropometric tests body fat session 4

You are to take the measurements of 2 people (not from yr 2 group)

Work out that persons Body Fat Percentage Fat Body weight Lean Body weight Amount of weight needed to lose for

ideal Make a document using tables to hand

in for the next session 17/10

You are to read in your book about VARTEC

which located after each test page 26 & 35

You are to produce a typed document.

Using VARTEC to analyse each test and hand in for your review appointment March 4th
