Reserved Workshops

Register Early for Reserved WorkshopsMost sessions have open seating and are held in rooms that canaccommodate anticipated attendance. Reserved Workshops,however, require advance reservations because of their specialeducational requirements (for example, close faculty–learnerinteraction or limited equipment for hands-on learning.) Thesesessions are offered at no charge to registered Internal Medicine2014 attendees but require advance reservations and are filledon a first-come, first-served basis. One ticket per attendee whilesupplies last.

Policy for Reserved WorkshopsYour registration reserves your place in the workshop; however,you must attend the workshop on time to claim your reservedplace. The College has the right to assign unclaimed reservedseats to standby attendees promptly at 10 minutes after theposted class starting time. Reserved workshops are generallyfilled to capacity prior to the meeting. Attendees who have notpreregistered for reserved workshops and arrive at the class-room without a ticket will be put on a first-come, first-servedstandby list. Learn office-based procedures, refineinterpretive skills, and update physical examinationskills in a unique, small-group learning environ-ment. Clinical Skills Training in Office-Based ProceduresUnder the guidance of expert faculty, learn andpractice procedures, such as ultrasound-guidedcentral line placement, common skin biopsytechniques, arthrocentesis and joint injections,lumbar puncture, and more.

Clinical Skills Training in Physical Examination and Interpretation SkillsWhether traditional small-group workshops or self-guided studyactivities, these sessions will help refine physical examination andinterpretation skills, such as heart sounds identification anddiagnosis, ankle-brachial index, ophthalmoscopic skills, chest x-ray interpretation, and more.

The management of patients with diabetes can be compli-cated and varies by age and gender. This Pre-Course willdiscuss the practical management of diabetes as patientstransition through the life cycle. Diabetes management issuesrelated to care for the young adult, pregnant woman, middle-aged patient with comorbid medical problems, and olderadults will be discussed. Finally, as the growing population ofdiabetic patients enters our health care system, the role ofcare teams in the management of these patients and theevidence behind the success of such management will bediscussed.

Learning Objectives:1. Recognize and manage diabetic patients from young

adults to the elderly.2. Discuss gestational diabetes in 2014 and the role of the

internist in diagnosis and management.3. Learn strategies to manage comorbid medical issues and

diabetes in clinical practice, with specific attention toperioperative management, cardiac disease, renal dis-ease, and liver disease.

This Pre-Course will focus on pearls to help the practicinginternist use drug therapies in the most effective manner.Newer medications and new uses for older medications willbe covered. Current recommendations for “best therapy” fordifferent diseases will also be covered. Common side effectsof medications will be emphasized. Faculty will providepractical information on therapy for common symptoms,pulmonary therapies, diabetes, infectious diseases, and druginteractions.

Learning Objectives:1. Prescribe appropriate drug therapies for diseases

commonly seen in the office. 2. Understand the current uses of older drugs and newly

released drugs. 3. Review the risk, benefit, and cost of various therapies,

This Pre-Course will provide a focused update of the diagnostic, preventive, andtherapeutic approaches to the patient at risk for, or with known, cardiovasculardisease. Expert clinician-educators will focus on the cardiovascular diseaseissues with which internists are most frequently faced and will provide key pointsto update the audience and foster patient care. Subjects covered will includeidentification and management of acute and chronic coronary artery disease,optimal treatment of congestive heart failure, risk assessment and risk reductionfor the patient with cardiac disease who undergoes noncardiac surgery,approach to the patient with valvular heart disease, use of the novel antithrom-botic and anticoagulant agents for the patient with cardiovascular disease, basicvenous disease for the internist, and a discussion of the approach to the patientwith new-onset chest pain.

Learning Objectives:1. Develop diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients with coronary artery

disease (acute and chronic).2. Understand the approach to evaluation and treatment of new-onset conges-

tive heart failure. 3. Understand what approaches are effective in decreasing hospital readmission

for the patient with chronic congestive heart failure. 4. Become familiar with the ACC/AHA guideline on valvular heart disease. 5. Become familiar with the guidelines for the evaluation and care of the patient

Hospital medicine is a specialty dedicated to the expert management of acutely ill hospital inpatients. Hospitalists are educators, clinicians, researchers,and leaders with a focus on quality, safety, resource utilization, and transitionsof care. The approach of this Pre-Course will be to address issues in clinicalinpatient care, with a hospitalist perspective on management and processimprovement. The individual lectures will be framed by the hospitalization of one patient who will be followed from admission to discharge with a case-based format and will utilize an audience-response system. The faculty, composed of experienced hospitalists from across the United States, willdiscuss ideal medical management and explore how to minimize the risk formany nosocomial complications. This Pre-Course will present an advancedperspective of hospital medicine.

Learning Objectives:1. Follow a hospitalization from admission to discharge.2. Review inpatient management of complex medical issues.3. Assess impact of rapid response teams.4. Explore the necessary steps to ensure a safe hospitalization.5. Discuss regulatory and business topics related to inpatient care.

Neurologic complaints comprise an important part of the practice of internalmedicine, but over the years the exposure to formal neurologic training aspart of internal medicine training has waned. This Pre-Course is designed tohelp internists approach the common neurologic problems seen in theirpatients and to update them in this rapidly changing field of medicine. Abroad view of the spectrum of neurologic disorders seen in the practice ofinternal medicine will be discussed, including the neurologic history andexamination, headache, dizziness, altered mental status, and peripheralneurology.

Learning Objectives:1. Take a neurologic history and perform a competent neurologic

examination.2. Recognize the major types of headache and initiate treatment for

each of them.3. Understand the spectrum of dizziness and be able to make the likely

diagnosis.4. Recognize and treat the major movement disorders.5. Examine the peripheral nervous system and diagnose the major

syndromes.

6. Identify the major stroke emergency and initiate appropriate therapy.

Gastrointestinal complaints are common, and patients will typically presentto their internists as the first point of care for such issues. Many conditionswithin gastroenterology are diagnosed based on symptom-based criteria,and understanding a cost-effective approach to the evaluation and man-agement of such patients is essential, as is recognizing which patientsrequire additional testing. This Pre-Course is designed to assist internists inthe practical approach in the evaluation and management of frequentlyencountered conditions within gastroenterology and hepatology. Topics tobe discussed include the appropriate surveillance practice patterns forthose with Barrett’s esophagus or colorectal neoplasia, the evaluation andmanagement of patients with suspected celiac disease or irritable bowelsyndrome, clinical pearls in the health maintenance of patients with chronicgastrointestinal and liver conditions, and addressing frequently askedquestions regarding ordering gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.

Learning Objectives:1. Recommend appropriate endoscopic surveillance patterns for patients

with common gastrointestinal conditions.2. Recognize the protean manifestations of celiac disease, and understand

the appropriate work-up to diagnose the condition.3. Understand clinical features needed to diagnosis irritable bowel

syndrome in a cost-effective manner.4. Identify important health maintenance issues in the care of patients

with chronic gastrointestinal or liver disorders.5. Recognize the patients who have special needs when it comes to

ordering endoscopic procedures

This Pre-Course will provide an overview of the 10threvision of the International Statistical Classification ofDiseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) and howit compares to ICD-9. Expert faculty will discuss the nutsand bolts of using the new coding system, what yourpractice needs to do to implement the new system, howto document care to support the new coding system,and the different implications for professional fee billing(from your practice) and facility billing (from your hospital).It will also cover how ICD-10 will affect the metrics, suchas patient severity of illness, risk adjustments, quality, andsafety, now being applied by Medicare and other payersto rate you and your practice.Topics will include:� How to use the ICD-10 coding system – the

structure and heightened specificity required for clinical documentation in the new coding system.

� How to use general equivalency mappings (GEMs) andbackward and forward cross-walks to translatebetween ICD-9 and ICD-10.

� Implementation implications, including dealing withvendors, payers, billing systems, staff training, andquality reporting.

� Examination of how ICD-10 will affect the ratings ofyou and your practice.

The Pre-Course will include both didactic componentsand interactive case studies focusing on notes frompatient charts. Key office staff are invited and encour-aged to register and attend with physician attendees.

ICD-9, and how ICD-10 is structured. 2. Learn how to use the coding system and how to

This Pre-Course will provide the opportunity to understand the principles of diagnosis and management of common clinical problems and conditionsencountered in the intensive care unit. Particular attention will be placed on the recognition of disease process, acute management of critical illness, and prevention of complications of critical illness in the critically ill adult patient.

Topics include acute coronary syndromes and myocardial infarction, acutestroke management, acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonaryembolism, drug overdose, septic shock, and severe pneumonia. Alsodiscussed will be the management of patients with a wide variety of infec-tious diseases, approaches to mental status evaluation, fever in the ICU,mechanical ventilatory support of the critically ill patient, and methods forpreventing common complications in the critically ill patient.

ABIM Maintenance of Certification Learning SessionsThese live, self-study sessions are designed to help internists complete theAmerican Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Self-Evaluation of MedicalKnowledge modules through group discussion led by expert faculty. Anaudience-response system is used to enhance the learning experience andencourage participation.

On each day, Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be two separate sessions(one in the morning and another in the afternoon). These sessions will coverthe 2012 and 2013 Update modules in Internal and Hospital Medicine.Each of the four Update modules qualifies for 10 Maintenance ofCertification points in the Self-Evaluation of Medical Knowledge category.You must register separately for each session that you wish to attend. Eachsession is designated for 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Learning Objectives:1. Participate in group discussion to determine answers to multiple-choice

questions.2. Complete the module(s) toward fulfillment of the ABIM’s Maintenance of

Certification requirements.

Guest Program Registrant ($50 for 3 days)Registered guests are invited to an exclusive breakfastevent, have access to the Exhibit Hall, access to therefreshments distributed in the Hall as well as an ACPtote bag; admission to the opening ceremony onThursday, an Orlando visitors’ guide; entry into a raffledrawing; shuttle service between hotels and theConvention Center; and the opportunity to purchasetour tickets through Accent on Arrangements, Inc. Registered guests may include family members (16years of age or older) or friends who are not in themedical industry. Exhibit Hall Attendees ($40 for 1 day)Guests of registered physicians who want to accessthe Exhibit Hall can register for a 1-day-only Exhibit Hallattendee badge. This badge provides admission to theExhibit Hall, as well as access to the refreshmentsdistributed in the Hall.

Internal Medicine 2014 Program ObjectivesAt the conclusion of Internal Medicine 2014,participants should be able to:

� Assess recent advances in clinical medicineand related sciences in light of the support-ing evidence.

� Implement changes in clinical practice inaccordance with these advances toimprove patient care.

� Improve their clinical skills in performing thephysical examination, communicating withpatients, and managing clinical information.

Who Should Attend Internal Medicine 2014?The meeting is intended for all physicians involvedin the practice of internal medicine. This includesgeneral internists, hospitalists, subspecialists ininternal medicine, family physicians, generalpractitioners, and residents and fellows in internalmedicine and its subspecialties.
