Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body from cellular damage caused by

free radicals. The body needs antioxidants because with every breath you take you

generate free radicals, which are highly reactive substances that can attack and damage

cells. As such, many experts believe that free radicals are major factors leading to more

than sixty different health problems including aging, cancer, and atherosclerosis.

Probiotics

What are probiotics?

Did you know that there are 20 times more bacteria than cells in your body? In fact,

at any one time, you have more bacteria in your body than the total number of

people who have ever lived on the planet. So the next time you step on the bathroom

scale, you need to remember that 1 pound of that weight is not you at all, but the

billions of bugs that live in your gut. This may sound alarming, but many of these

organisms are crucial to good health.

The word "Probiotic" simply means “for life” which explains why these

nutrients are so important.

“A live microbial feed supplement, which beneficially affects the host by

improving its intestinal microbial balance”

A Probiotic is an organism which contributes to the health and balance of

the intestinal tract. A probiotic is also referred to as the "friendly",

"beneficial", or "good" bacteria which when ingested acts to maintain a

healthy intestinal tract and help fight illness and disease. Probiotics are

bacteria that help maintain the natural balance of organisms (microflora) in

the intestines. The normal human digestive tract contains about 400 types of

probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a

healthy digestive system. The largest group of probiotic bacteria in the

intestine is lactic acid bacteria

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are the most common type of microbes used. LAB have

been used in the food industry for many years, because they are able to convert sugars

(including lactose) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid. This not only provides the

characteristic sour taste of fermented foods or drinks, but also by lowering the pH may

create fewer opportunities for spoilage organisms to grow, hence creating possible health

benefits on preventing gastrointestinal infections.

Page 5: About probiotics

Our body contains billions of bacteria and other microorganisms. The term

"probiotics" refers to dietary supplements or foods that contain beneficial, or "good,"

bacteria that are similar to those normally found in your body. Probiotics are needed by

our body to be healthy, these microorganisms may provide some of the same health

benefits that the bacteria already existing in your body do such as assisting with digestion

and helping protect against harmful bacteria.

A healthy lower intestine should contain at least 85% friendly bacteria to

prevent the over colonization of disease causing micro-organisms like E.

coli and salmonella. Our colon can maintain its health, with 15%

unfriendly bacteria, and if the body contains at least 85% probiotic

friendly bacteria. Most people have this percentage reversed, 15%

good bacteria and 85% bad bacteria.

Probiotics enhance the immune system by favorably altering the gut micro-ecology and

preventing unfriendly organisms from gaining a foothold in the body. They prevent the

overgrowth of yeast and fungus and produce substances that can lower cholesterol.

Probiotics are widely recommended for the treatment of Candida - a fungal infection -

because they establish large, healthy populations of friendly bacteria that compete with

the Candida that is trying to take up residence in the intestine. Probiotics are also

essential in the treatment and prevention of thrush, vaginal yeast infections, and athlete's

foot. Good health depends fundamentally upon the more than 400 types of friendly,

symbiotic bacteria that inhabit the digestive tract.

Below are some pictures of probiotic bacterias.

Page 6: About probiotics

What are probiotics used for?

Probiotics prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics. Antibiotics kill "good" (beneficial)

bacteria along with the bacteria that cause illness. A decrease in beneficial bacteria may

lead to diarrhea. Taking probiotic supplements may help replace the lost beneficial

bacteria and help prevent diarrhea.

A decrease in beneficial bacteria may also lead to development of other infections,

such as vaginal yeast and urinary tract infections, and symptoms such as diarrhea

from intestinal illnesses.

Taking probiotics will help:

Reduce bladder cancer recurrence

Shorten the duration of intestinal infections

Prevent and treat inflammation following colon surgery (pouchitis)-

Prevent eczema in children

o Managing Lactose Intolerance

o Prevention of Colon Cancer

o Cholesterol Lowering

o Lowering Blood Pressure

o Improving Immune Function and Preventing Infections

Helicobacter pylori

Antibiotic-associated diarrhea

o Reducing Inflammation

o Improving Mineral Absorption

The Health Benefits of Pineapple

PINE APPLE - known as the fruit of kings, is a tropical fruit, it contains a

proteolytic enzyme bromelain. One of the most important enzymes in

pineapples is bromelain and it is bromelain that holds the key to many of the

pineapple's health benefits.

Bromelain and pineapples Bromelain has been found to be a useful anti-inflammatory, effective in

reducing swelling and assisting in the treatment of conditions such as acute

sinusitis, sore throat, arthritis and gout. Pineapple is high in anti-oxidants

Fresh pineapple is full of these sulphur-containing, protein-digesting compounds

which helps in the digestion of protein. Pineapple can prevent blood clot

formation because of its bromelain .

Pineapple is Loaded with Vitamins and Minerals

The benefits of pineapple are all the vitamins and minerals the

fruit is loaded with. Its nutrients include calcium, potassium,

fiber, and vitamin C. In addition it is low in fat and cholesterol.

Page 10: About probiotics

Pineapple Strengthens Bones

One of the benefits of pineapple is that it helps to build healthy bones. Pineapples are

rich in manganese, a trace mineral that is needed for your body to build bone and

connective tissues.

Pineapple is high in anti-oxidants

Pineapple offers your body an excellent protection against free-radicals, substances that

attack healthy cells. A build up of free-radicals can lead to atherosclerosis and diabetic

heart disease, an increase in asthma attacks and an increased risk of developing certain

cancers, such as colon cancer. Free-radicals have also been shown to accentuate the

problems associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Pineapple is Good for Colds and Coughs

While many people often take extra vitamin C or drink extra orange juice when they have

a cold, few consider eating pineapple. The benefits of pineapple when you have a cold or

cough are the same as the benefits of orange juice, but there is an additional benefit of

pineapple. Bromelain, which is found in pineapples, has been found to help suppress

coughs and loosen mucus.

Pineapple is Beneficial also in the following condition :

1. It is regulates the gland and found to be helpful in cases of goiter(enlargement

of the thyroid gland).

2. Dyspepsia (chronic digestive disturbance).

3. Bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchial tubes.)

4. Catarrh (secretions from mucous membranes).

5. High Blood pressure.

6. Arthritis (diseases of the joints)

7. Fresh pineapple juice is also used in removing intestinal worms.

8. Fresh pineapple juice has been used to combat diptheria and other infections of

the throat or other parts of the body.

9. Prevents nausea (includes morning sickness and motion sickness), Take 230 cc.

of pineapple juice or papaya juice.

10. Constipation

Pineapple is a very good source of vitamin C, pineapple offers your body an excellent

protection against free-radicals, substances that attack healthy cells. A build up of

Page 11: About probiotics

free-radicals can lead to atherosclerosis and diabetic heart disease, an increase in asthma

attacks and an increased risk of developing certain cancers, such as colon cancer. Free-

radicals have also been shown to accentuate the problems associated with osteoarthritis

and rheumatoid arthritis.

High in vitamin C; Good source of potassium; Loaded with manganese; Anti-

inflammatory; Aid in digestion; Reduces blood clotting; May help angina by removing

plaque from arterial walls.

It also has anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. The bromelain in

Pineapple helps fight infections by dissolving layers of slough and bacteria-

rich surfaces. This fruit can also be used to aid in digestion.

It can clear bronchial passages in those suffering with pneumonia and bronchitis.

The anti-inflammatory properties in this fruit help reduce the symptoms of

arthritis, and help reduce pain after surgery and sport injuries.

Pineapple is good for your gums: Due to its high vitamin C content, pineapples are

good for your oral health as well. Vitamin C can reduce your risk of gingivitis and

periodontal disease. Besides increasing the ability of connective tissue to repair itself,

vitamin C also increases the body's ability to fight invading bacteria and other toxins that

contribute to gum disease. Periodontal disease, which destroys gum tissue and underlying

jaw bones, has been linked to heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

The obvious benefits of pineapple are all the vitamins and minerals the fruit is loaded

with. Its nutrients include calcium, potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. In addition it is

low in fat and cholesterol.

GRAPES

Grape health benefits are mostly attributed to compounds called flavonoids

(quercitin and reservatrol), which are phytochemicals that give the vibrant purple

color to grapes, grape juice, and red wine; The stronger the color, the higher the

concentration of the flavonoids.

Grape seeds healthier than the fruit

Grape seeds are powerful antioxidants which blocks premature aging and diseases

by controlling free radicals. Some grape seed extracts are known to have 50 times

the nutritional value of vitamin E and C. They also have anti viral, anti

carcinogenic properties which ensure smooth blood circulation. Grape skins are

nutritious too. They destroy cancer cells in the human body.

Grapes contain beneficial compounds called flavonoids, which are phytonutrients.

These flavonoid compounds include quercitin, as well as a second flavonoid-

type compound (falling into the chemical category of stilbenes)called

resveratrol. Both compounds appear to decrease the risk of heart disease by:

Reducing platelet clumping and harmful blood clots

Protecting LDL c Resveratrol is a protective compound produced by grapes and

other plants in response to environmental stresses. It has potent antioxidant activity

and also has the ability to inhibit platelet aggregation. These actions may help

prevent free radical damage throughout the body and provide protective support to

the cardiovascular system. Resveratrol is found in the skins of grapes.

cholesterol from the free radical damage that initiates LDL's artery-damaging

actions .

Protection Against Heart Disease

Helps reduce the formation of clots in blood vessels.

Resveratrol Helps Keep the Heart Muscle Flexible and Healthy

Grapes have a very important compound called resveratrol which has shown anti-aging.

Page 13: About probiotics

Resveratrol, a flavonoid found in grapes can improve blood flow in the brain by 30%,

thus greatly reducing the risk of stroke

Resveratrol is a protective compound produced by grapes in response to environmental

stresses. It has potent antioxidant activity and also has the ability to inhibit platelet

aggregation. These actions may help prevent free radical damage throughout the body

and provide protective support to the cardiovascular system. Resveratrol is found in the

skins of grapes.

Angiotensin

Has a negative effect on heart health in that it signals cardiac fibroblasts, the family of

heart muscle cells responsible for secreting collagen, to proliferate. The result is the

production of excessive amounts of collagen, which causes the heart muscle to stiffen,

reducing its ability to pump blood efficiently.

The Role of Grapes' Saponins in Supporting Heart Health

Some of the health benefits attributed to grapes include:

Protects LDL cholesterol from the free radical damage that initiates LDL's artery-

damaging actions.

Reduces platelet clumping and harmful blood clots. Helps keep the heart muscle

flexible and healthy.

Reduces the risk of hypertension-related death.

Acts as a preventative agent in prostrate, lung, liver, and breast

May inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of live tumors.

Reduces the inflammation associated with COPD.

Protects against macular degeneration.

Page 14: About probiotics

Grapes have been used for treating metabolism disorders, liver, kidney and lung disorders

and cardiovascular problems. Grapes improve metabolism and have diuretic, anti

inflammation, light laxative and inducing perspiration effect.

Grapes help with nervous exhaustion, hypertension, high blood pressure, bronchitis

and gout. Eating grapes strengthens your body when you need to recover from

anemia.

Other Health Benefits:

- It detoxifies and cleanse the system encouraging weight loss

-It reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and cancer

-Grapes are the sources of vitamin A, B, B6 and folate

-It contains a compound called pterostilbene which reduces cholesterol and

triglycerides

-Minerals like potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and

selenium are found in grapes .

-Copper, manganese and zinc are also present in grapes

-It has fiber and proteins

-a soluble fiber (hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the

digestive tract.

PAPAYA- (papain) taken from the Greek word “ panacea” – which

means cures all, a good source of carotene, a precursor of vitamin

A that prevents damage to the cells by free radicals that may lead to

some forms of cancer. The enzyme papain in unripe papaya 0 aids

in digesting protein in acid, alkaline or neutral medium. It is

recommended for invalids and dyspeptic patients as the papain aids in

digesting the food and is very effective in killing intestinal worms.

Papaya is loaded with vitamin A and harbors more vitamin C. It also contains

vitamin E, folate, and potassium. It contains three very powerful antioxidants.

Papaya has more than its impressive nutritional benefits. It also harbors natural digestive

enzymes that provide you with additional papaya health benefits. Papaya enzyme

benefits.

Papaya consists of two very important enzymes called papain and chymonpapain

which help digest protein in the body. Of the two enzymes, papain is the most abundant

and most active enzyme. These enzymes are most concentrated when the fruit is picked

green.

The papaya is an amazingly rich source of the proteolytic enzymes. These are the

chemicals that enable the digestion of protein. Papain, which is the most important of

these enzymes in the papaya.

Papaya enzyme benefits:

It's a great natural digestive aid and it promotes digestive health.

Other papaya enzyme benefits include the medicinal uses of papain in the following:

Used in connection with edemas, inflammatory processes, and in the acceleration of

wound healing

Defibrinating wounds in hospitals

Prevents cornea scar deformation

Page 16: About probiotics

Used in treatments of jellyfish and insect sings

Papaya was reputably called the "fruit of the angels" by Christopher Columbus.

Health Benefits:

Papayas are rich sources of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C and

flavonoids; the B vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium and

magnesium; and fiber. These nutrients promote the health of the cardiovascular system

and also provide protection against colon cancer. The enzyme, papain, is used like

bromelain, a similar enzyme found in pineapple, to treat sports injuries, other causes of

trauma, and allergies.

Protection Against Heart Disease

Papayas may be very helpful for the prevention of atherosclerosis and diabetic heart

disease. Papayas are an excellent source of vitamin C as well as a good source of vitamin

E and vitamin A (through their concentration of pro-vitamin A carotenoid

phytonutrients), three very powerful antioxidants.

These nutrients help prevent the oxidation of cholesterol. Only when cholesterol

becomes oxidized is it able to stick to and build up in blood vessel walls, forming

dangerous plaques that can eventually cause heart attacks or strokes. One way in which

dietary vitamin E and vitamin C may exert this effect is through their suggested

association with a compound called paraoxonase, an enzyme that inhibits LDL

cholesterol and HDL cholesterol oxidation.

Papayas are also a good source of fiber, which has been shown to lower high cholesterol

levels. The folic acid found in papayas is needed for the conversion of a substance called

homocysteine into benign amino acids such as cysteine or methionine. If unconverted,

homocysteine can directly damage blood vessel walls and, if levels get too high, is

considered a significant risk factor for a heart attack or stroke.

Promotes Digestive Health

The nutrients in papaya have also been shown to be helpful in the prevention of colon

cancer. Papaya's fiber is able to bind to cancer-causing toxins in the colon and keep them

away from the healthy colon cells. In addition, papaya's folate, vitamin C, beta-carotene,

and vitamin E have each been associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer.

Page 17: About probiotics

These nutrients provide synergistic protection for colon cells from free radical damage to

their DNA. Increasing your intake of these nutrients by enjoying papaya is an especially

good idea for individuals at risk of colon cancer.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Papaya contains several unique protein-digesting enzymes including papain and

chymopapain. These enzymes have been shown to help lower inflammation and to

improve healing from burns. In addition, the antioxidant nutrients found in papaya,

including vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, are also very good at reducing

inflammation. This may explain why people with diseases that are worsened by

inflammation, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, find that the

severity of their condition is reduced when they get more of these nutrients.

Immune Support

Vitamin C and vitamin A, which is made in the body from the beta-carotene in papaya,

are both needed for the proper function of a healthy immune system. Papaya may

therefore be a healthy fruit choice for preventing such illnesses as recurrent ear

infections, colds and flu.

Protection against Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older

adults, by 36%, compared to persons who consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily. In

this study, which involved over 110,000 women and men, researchers evaluated the

effect of study participants' consumption of fruits the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E;

and carotenoids on the development of early ARMD or neovascular ARMD, a more

severe form of the illness associated with vision loss. Papaya intake was definitely

protective against the severe form of this vision-destroying disease.

Protection against Rheumatoid Arthritis

Papaya, provide humans with protection against inflammatory polyarthritis, a form of

rheumatoid arthritis involving two or more joints.

Promote Lung Health

Vitamin A-rich foods, such as papaya, can help greatly reducing emphysema.

Vitamin A's protective effects may help not develop emphysema.

Papaya prevent Prostate Cancer

Page 18: About probiotics

BANANA- the fruit of a plant of the genus Musa (family

Musaceae)

HEALTH BENEFITS:

Banana has a high content in potassium and fibers (and vitamins as

B6, C and A ),

It contains tryptophan, an amino acid that the body converts into

SEROTONIN – a hormone that naturally relaxes the body, leading to

improved mood.

It has Vitamin B6 that regulates blood glucose levels and prevents mood

swings.

Bananas are high in iron, thus stimulate the production of hemoglobin to

prevent anemia.

Its potassium content yet low in sodium makes it the perfect way to beat

blood pressure.

It has PECTIN, the fiber which restores normal bowel action and B

vitamins for regulation of the nervous system.

It also has a natural antacid effect especially beneficial for heartburn.

Bananas consist mainly of sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and

fiber, which makes them ideal for an immediate and slightly

prolonged source of energy.

It helps to reduce depression

Its helps constipation and diarrhea problem

Page 19: About probiotics

It helps restore a normal bowel function, because of its fiber

content.. In addition, diarrhea usually depletes your body of important

electrolytes (of which the most important is potassium, contained in high

amounts bananas). They also contain pectin, a soluble fiber (hydrocolloid)

that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract.

Eyesight Protection

Research published in the Archives of Ophthalmology has proven that

adults consuming at least 3 servings of fruit per day have a reduced risk

(by 36%) of developing age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the

primary cause of vision loss in older adults, compared to persons who

consume less than 1.5 servings of fruit daily.

Healthy Bones

Bananas are an exceptionally rich source of fructooligosaccharide, a

compound that nourishes probiotic (friendly) bacteria in the colon. These

beneficial bacteria produce enzymes that increase our digestive ability and

protect us from unhealthy bacteria infections. Thanks to

fructooligosaccharides, probiotic bacteria can increase both in number and

functionality, increasing our body's ability to absorb calcium.

In addition, green bananas contain indigestible short chain fatty acids

(SCFAs) that are very nutrient to the cells that make up the mucosa of the

stomach. These cells, when healthy, absorb calcium much more efficiently

Healthy Kidney

Research published in the International Journal of Cancer has shown that

daily consumption of bananas, is highly protective to kidney health.

Among the fruits, bananas were especially protective. Women eating

bananas four to six times a week halved their risk of developing the

disease compared to those who did not eat this fruit. The conclusion of

the study is that frequent consumption of bananas may reduce risk of

kidney cancer. This is because bananas contain especially high

amounts of antioxidant phenolic compounds necessary for effective

detoxificationofpotential carcinogens.

Page 20: About probiotics

Blood Pressure

Bananas are extremely high in potassium (about 4673mg), yet very low in

sodium (1mg), thus having a perfect ratio for preventing high blood pressure. So

much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana

industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood

pressure and stroke.

Heartburn

Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from

heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness

Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood-sugar levels up

and avoid morning sickness.

Smoking

Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. They contain

vitamins B6 and B12 they contain, as well as potassium and magnesium: these

substances help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Ulcers

This is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-

chronicle cases. It also helps reduce acidity and reduces irritation. Bananas

stimulate the cells on the internal stomach lining to produce a thicker mucus

(which protects against acid). Additionally, bananas contain protease inhibitors

that help eliminate bacteria in the stomach that have been pinpointed as a

primary cause of ulcers.

Nerves

Page 21: About probiotics

Bananas are high in B vitamins that have been shows to improve nerve

function.

Mosquito Bites

Many people report that rubbing the inside of a banana peel on a mosquito

bite is very effective in reducing itching and swelling.

Stress Relief

Bananas are high in potassium, which helps normalize the hearthbeat and

regulate the body's water balance. During periods of high stress, our body's

potassium levels tend to be rapidly depleted: eating bananas is a healthy way to

rebalance them without using drugs

Stroke Risk

Page 22: About probiotics

MANGOSTEEN- (Garcinia mangostana) is the Queen of Fruits

known worldwide as the no. 1 in ORAC VALUE ( oxygen radical absorbance

capacity) or antioxidant property.Mangosteen extract is widely recognized in

the natural prevention of arthritis, cancer, acid dyspepsia, fibromyalgia,

asthma, asthma, and otitis external. It is highly effective against

methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA), a bacterium

responsible for staphylococcal infections like pimples.

The primary active components of the mangosteen fruit are called xanthones.

Xanthones are a recently discovered class of polyphenolic compounds that are

biologically active and structurally similar to bioflavanoids. These compounds occur

only rarely in nature, with the majority being found in only two families of plants. Two

hundred naturally occurring xanthones have so far been identified. Around forty of them

have been discovered in the mangosteen fruit.

Xanthones and their derivatives have been shown to have several benefits, including

anti-inflammatory properties, anti-allergic, and anti convulsant abilities. There are

also other components of the mangosteen that have medicinal qualities, including

polysaccharides, sterols, proanthocyanidins and catechins. These are less nutritionally

important and biologically active than xanthones, but are still a major part of providing

the fruit with its medicinal benefits, since many of them act as antioxidants.

Xanthones by definition are biologically active plant phenols that possess a high degree

of medicinal properties. Garcinia Mangostana L. or the Mangosteen tree, is a natural

source of dietary xanthones that offer a wide range of health benefits.

Guava is a tropical fruit that is like the shape of pear, with green rind and pinkish or

white flesh and small seeds. Some people say Guava is better than orange because

guava contain more Vitamin C than orange and guava is a lot cheaper than orange.

The health benefits of guava include diarrhea, dysentery, constipation, cough, cold, skin

care, high blood pressure, weight loss, scurvy, etc.

Guava is very common in Asian countries. It is a good looking pear shaped or round

shaped seasonal fruit, light green or yellow or maroon in color from outside when ripe,

with white or maroon flesh and lots of small hard seeds enveloping very soft and sweet

pulp. It is eaten raw (ripe or semi-ripe) or in form of jams and jellies. This attractive fruit

is a real storehouse of nutrients. If it is “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” in Europe

and Americas, it must be “A few guavas in the season keeps the doctor away for the

whole year” in the Indian Subcontinent and places where guavas grow. Its scientific name

is Psidium Guajava.

Page 31: About probiotics

The brilliant health benefits of GUAVA:

Diarrhea & Dysentery: Guava is very rich in astringents (compounds those

make your gums feel tighter and fresh after you chew guava leaves or eat a raw

guava or use some toothpaste) which binds up loose bowels in diarrhea. These

astringents are alkaline in nature and have disinfectant and anti-bacterial

properties, thus help cure dysentery by inhibiting microbial growth and removing

extra mucus from the intestines. Other nutrients in guava, such as vitamin-C,

Carotenoids and potassium strengthens and tones up the digestive system and

disinfect it. Guava is also beneficial in gastroenteritis due to reasons stated above.

Constipation: Guava is one of the riches sources of dietary fiber. Its seeds, if

ingested whole or chewed, serve as excellent laxatives. These two properties of

guava help forming bowels, retaining water and clean your intestines and

excretory system thoroughly. It is said that single constipation can lead to seventy

two types of ailments. It is absolutely true. Every way to your total health goes

through proper digestion and more importantly, proper excretion. Guava ensures

both of these.

Cough & Cold: Juice of raw and immature guavas or decoction of guava-leaves

is very helpful in giving relief in cough and cold by loosening cough, reducing

mucus, disinfecting the respiratory tract, throat and lungs and inhibiting microbial

activity due to its astringent properties. Guava is one of richest in vitamin-C and

iron which are proven to be preventive against cold and viral infections. In some

areas in India, roasted ripe guava is used as a remedy against extreme cases of

cough and cold and congestion.

Skin Care: Guavas can help improve your skin texture and avoid skin problems

more than the best of beauty creams or skin toner gels can do. This is chiefly due

to the abundance of astringents in its fruits (more in immature ones) and in leaves.

You can benefit from it either by eating the fruits (this help tighten your muscles

apart from your skin) or by washing your skin with the decoction of its immature

fruits and leaves. It will tone up and tighten the loosened skin. In addition to the

astringents, guava is very-very rich in vitamin-A, B, C and potassium which are

very good anti oxidants and detoxifiers and keep your skin glowing and free from

aging, wrinkles and other disorders.

High Blood Pressure: Guava helps reduce cholesterol in blood and prevents it

from thickening, thereby maintaining fluidity of blood and reducing blood

pressure. Studies have shown that food stuffs which lack fiber (such a refined

flour) add to blood pressure, due to quick conversion to sugar. Guava, being very

rich in fiber and hypoglycemic in nature, helps reduce blood pressure.

Weight Loss: Guava is very helpful for those who want to lose weight without

compromising with their intake of proteins, vitamins and fiber. Guava, being very

high in roughage and very rich in vitamins, proteins and minerals, but with no

cholesterol and less digestible carbohydrates, is very filling and satisfies appetite

very easily. Just have a medium sized guava in the lunch and you will not feel

hungry till night. But ironically, it helps gaining weight in lean and thin people.

This is probably due to its richness in nutrients, which keeps your metabolism

right helping proper absorption of nutrients.

Page 32: About probiotics

Scurvy: Guava can outdo many other fruits, including orange and other citrus

fruits, when it comes to concentration of vitamin-C, whose deficiency causes

scurvy and which is the only remedy to it. It contains five times the vitamin-C in

oranges.

SCURVY - is a disease caused by insufficient vitamin C, the

symptoms of which include spongy gums, loosening of the teeth, and bleeding into

the skin and mucous membranes

Other Benefits: Guava helps control diabetes, protects prostrate, its Lypocene reduces

the risk of cancer, the juice of the leaves cures toothache, swollen gums & oral ulcers,

heals wounds when applied externally, convulsions, epilepsy, bacterial infections and so

on and so forth. The health benefits of guava include diarrhea, dysentery, constipation,
